Problems with Event Queries

Problems with Event Queries

All of our servers have dual port Compaq NICs for redundancy. I have created an event query with an email notification task to notify me if one of the ports goes down (either port died, cable unplugged, etc). In the event query I have selected events of type and then in my criteria selected NIC redundancy reduced. Then as I test I have been unplugging and replugging the redundant cable. The server goes from a normal status to a minor status in devices, but the event query does not seem to be triggered. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Problems with Event Queries

I'm not positive that the event related to NIC redudnancy is sent. What event was sent to the XE console? Instead of looking at that query, look at the All Events query and see what event you did get when you pull one of the NIC cables.

Of course, if you aren't getting any that means you don't have SNMP traps setup properly. If you are getting an event, note that type and use that for your query.

Re: Problems with Event Queries

I discovered that I did not have the SNMP traps correctly configured. I resolved that problem and began receiving notification, etc. Now as a security measure I decided to create my own SNMP trap community. I am still receiving notification as I expect, but now when I send a test trap message, it is not received. I have everything configured on both sides with the same community names. What am I doing wrong? As a side note, is there any detailed documentation with examples on how to setup SNMP securely. I am pretty unfamiliar with it and the XE User Guide does not seem to go into great detail.

Re: Problems with Event Queries

I wish there was a good guide on SNMP - maybe there is something from your OS vendor (Microsoft, Novell, etc.)?

I'm not sure why you couldn't get a trap when you changed the community, this is not especially relevant for traps. But, make sure that the system where XE is running is setup with that community as well.

Re: Problems with Event Queries

Hi - I also have the same problem with custom events not being triggered. I am trying to monitor power supply failures. When I remove a power cable, the server web agent realises but Insight does not react and send an email. I guess this is SNMP settings on Insight again ? As above, the device changes from "normal" to "major".

Re: Problems with Event Queries

IanK - do you have the system where CIM XE is running setup as a Trap Destination in the SNMP settings?

Re: Problems with Event Queries

Thanks Scott - I didn't have the server-side setup properly so Insight wasn't actually receiving any traps...
