SQL and IM 7 SP2.3
Hi all,
Question regarding the use of SQL? We have at least 300 servers to be managed by IM7 SP2.3, can we use MSDE or doe we need to implement SQL?
Thanks,
Remco

Re: SQL and IM 7 SP2.3
Note: IM7 has reached end-of-life and its replacement, HP Systems Insight Manager is already available. I would discourage any new installation of IM7.
Rule of thumb (for both IM7 and HP SIM):
MSDE: 500 devices and 5,000 events
SQL Server 2000: 5,000 devices and 50,000 events
Are people using MSDE successfully with more than 500 devices? Yes. Do some people with less than 500 devices use SQL Server 2000? Yes, and they probably wouldn't have it any other way.
One thing to keep in mind is that MSDE only allows for local access, so if you want to do custom reporting from the DB using ODBC and Office or Crystal Reports or something, you will have to do it from the central management server.
One important thing to note: when using SQL Server, the only client access license that is needed is for the HP SIM application. There is only one "user" as far as the DB is concerned no matter how many HP SIM users there are. Since SQL Server can be located on a different server than HP SIM, if you have a monster machine set us for all your company's databases, one CAL is all it takes to use the DB server from HP SIM.
