Can SIM monitor server not on the Domain?

Hello,

I am attempting to Monitor a ML330 not on a domain(and cant be put on one. I have noticed that the VC will not work since it can not access the repository on the domain so I install a VCRM on the system. But the SIM agents are VERY slow if they come up at all. It can take 10 minutes to open the webagent main page. Is there something I can change to make this work better? aside from putting this server on the domain?

Thanks

Re: Can SIM monitor server not on the Domain?

Richard,
Hardware monitoring (SNMP Polling of the agents)is done through SNMP by the SIM server every 5 minutes by default. SIM doesn't care if the server is in a workgroup or on a domain.
You mention that "...the VC will not work since it cannot access the repository..."
Are you speaking of the Version Control Agent? If so...a successful connection between the VCA and the VCRepository is based on two things:
1. Trust between the target and the VCR (usually the SIM server).
Trust All
Trust by Name
Trust by Certificate
(the VCA has no trust on its own)

2. Web account and password setup correctly on the VCA page on the target server. This web account and password area is referencing the web account that resides on the VCR server.
So the bottom line is...the target servers that SIM manages through SNMP do not have to reside on the domain. Just make sure you have Trust properly established and the VCA pointing the VCR server properly.

Re: Can SIM monitor server not on the Domain?

These sound a bit like DNS Issues.

As Ed has pointed out, the target Server does not need to be on the domain. HPSIM can monitor other devices besides NT.

You can use the IP Address of your target VCRM in the VCA Configuration for the ML330.

If you're using the AD DNS as your only DNS then you might want to manually add the ML330 into the DNS. This might speed things up a bit if it's trying to resolve names etc.
