Communication SIM <-> Agents

Hi,

I know you can exchange certificates between SIM and the agents. Is this only used for authentication purposes or is it also used to encrypt the data exchange? If it's used to encrypt, which protocol is used (standard or HP, ports)? Is there still data sent over SNMP? IS there a document which describes this communication in detail?
