insight manager no longer working

all of a sudden, our insight manager has stopped working. no warnings, nothing at all.

if i restart the service, i get the messages:

mxinventory(error): Received a remote exception while binding to RMI registry.
--------------


a day or so ago, i was getting this error message in the event log:

Lost connection to database, exception: java.sql.SQLException: I/O Error: Connection reset SQL=SELECT Name FROM devices WHERE DeviceKey in (select devicekey from deviceurls where urlname = 'compaq.hmmo.vcrepository')

Is the SQL Server running; connections / queries possible?
Is the ODBC Configuration getting a successful test connect?

Consider checking the Remote Support Software Manager for any failed packages. If you see any packages which has failed to install, you may uninstall them. Take a Reboot and SIM should come up.

I get this all of the time.. sim just dies using remote sql for the server it looks like this might have something to do with the way it connects to the database.
