Problem upgrading HP management agents from 6.40 to 7.30

When performing a manual or automatic (through VCR) management agent update on a windows 2003 server, mainly from version 6.40 to version 7.30, the system smangament home page only displays the version control agent and no other agents. I have tried rolling back and going up a version at a time or going from 6.4 to 7.0 and then 7.1 etc but still no joy. Please see attached screen shot for info.
Any ideas anyone?

What OS and hardware are you running?

Are you manually deploying the entire Support Pack or just components?

I would suggest running the setup of the entire Support Pack and check that it detects the existing components that need to be upgraded.

Hi,

Does your SNMP Communitys are well configured?
Do you have any READ-WRITE SNMP Community set, and "accept traps from" : localhost, at least?
Try stopping VCA Agent service, and restarting, all other Insigth services. If VCA is not configured to talk to a valid VCRM, that can cause Insight agents issues.

Re: Problem upgrading HP management agents from 6.40 to 7.30

Guys

I'm running 2003 server on either a DL360 G3 or a DL380 G3, it won't work on either.
I have tried to push the upgrade from the VCRM and from the individual systems insight agents support pack and also by running up the repository on the server and selecting the required updates. All seem to fail.

The community name settings are set correctly and are the same as the global SIM snmp settings and they have read write access from any host so shouldn't cause a problem there. I'm scratching my head at present.

Re: Problem upgrading HP management agents from 6.40 to 7.30

I have many DL380G3's. I was told by tech support before I began to remove all of the older agents first, and then install the latest that I downloaded. I am using PSP 7.3.

I install the first 3 programs manually and not from CD, so that they will install interactively.
CP005171.exe (System Management Homepage)
CP005194.exe (Insight Manager Agents)
Select trust all just to get yourself started.
CP005177.exe (Version Control Agents)

Also, with Win2K3 the SNMP is a little differnt than Win2K.
Make sure there is both a Read Only community and a Read/Write community name.

On the managed servers, ensure that they are allowed to receive SNMP from
1- localhost
2- HP SIM CMS server name
3- HP SIM CMS server IP address

On the HP SIM CMS server, ensure that it receives SNMP from all hosts.

Re: Problem upgrading HP management agents from 6.40 to 7.30

Hey Gary,

From my understanding, I upgraded from Insight 7 running 6.40 to HP SIM 4.2 w/ 7.30A. With the new Management Homepage, it uses Windows Authentication, The new VRCM also utilizes Windows Authentication to access the repository. Since the other servers are trying to access the VCRM, and the VCRM is utilizing Windows Auth, all of the servers you are trying to update are still using the Default Admin, Op, and User groups, and not authenticating properly. I was told you have to run the Deployment utility and update one of the servers, then you can utilize the SIM Server and replicate agent settings across all of the servers. I tried numerous way of replicating agents and settings and couldnt get it to work, so I just used the deployment utility in the PSP to install on all of the servers...Major pain, but all of them installed. Afterwards, while at an HP meeting, I was told that OpenSSH needed to be installed in order to get it to work. Either way, it took longer using the deployment utility, but you can configure each of the agents/software to be installed.

Re: Problem upgrading HP management agents from 6.40 to 7.30

Were the agents configured before you deployed them, e.g trust certificates etc.

You should be able to go from 6.40 to 7.30.
Check the SNMP settings are correct, note SNMP on W2003 allows selected hosts access by default, and so you need the CMS and localhost added. You also need at least a read only community name set up.

Once that's done try restarting the agents.

All

Thanks for the numerous responses, only had chance to try one so far which didn't work. I need to arrange suitable time with the customer to try the fixes / updates and then I'll get back to you and rate them all.

Re: Problem upgrading HP management agents from 6.40 to 7.30

Guys

Thanks for all your replies. Brents resolution fixes the problem although it's a bit of a pain having to manually run 3 softpaqs before deploying from VCRM. One thing has changed slightly on Brents resolution, there is a later version of the system management homepage which is CP005390.exe but it works a treat.
Now gotta go and deploy it to 120 servers.
