"Checking HTTP server status." What does this mean?

My department is new to HPSIM as we never made the conversion to Insight Manager 7 from the old 4.9 version. As such we are not familiar with all the requirements of the HPSIM. As far as my question goes, I have manually installed a named instance of MSDE and ran a typical install of HPSIM and all the components installed with it, pointing to this named instance. The install ran fine, but now when I try to open HPSIM I get a bland IE window with a generic messege reading "Checking HTTP server status." and it gives what I guess is a timer. I have left this running for a period of at least 12 hours and nothing has changed. Infact I've notice the timer has relapsed several times. If anyone could help this new user understand what is happening or fix his problem I'd surely appreciate it.

Did you apply Service pack 3a to msde?
If not, you will need to do that. Also keep in mind that SIM will install msde with sp3a for you thus eliminating the frustration of doing it yourself.

Yes I am using SP3a. Just to be sure I uninstalled HPSIM and MSDE, then downloaded SqlSp3a from Microsoft and installed MSDE again... same problem. I uninstalled both again then installed MSDE through the HPSIM setup but the setup fails saying it can't create the HPSIM database.

Re: "Checking HTTP server status." What does this mean?

When you use the desktop shortcut or the Start Menu to launch to hpSIM, the applet first checks to see if the HTTP service is running yet. In some situations it seems that it does not get a response.

In that case, close the window and launch IE and go to http://SERVERNAME:50000. If you get a DNS or other error, the launch applet was right, the HTTP server hasn't initialized and should be troubleshooted from there.

Re: "Checking HTTP server status." What does this mean?

My SIM has been running fine for a week after hashing out some issues with W2K3 SNMP security settings ('Accept SNMP packets from these hosts' default setting, add the SIM servername to this list).

Now when I click on the desktop shortcut I'm getting the same thing: Checking HTTP server status. with the minutes and seconds sync'ed with my clock. If I launch a browser and enter http://servername:280 it forwards to http://servername:280/login.jsp;jsessionid=(98765....) and functions properly.

I see the obvious work around, don't use the shortcut, but what's the problem and what has changed?

Re: "Checking HTTP server status." What does this mean?

I had the same problem; "Checking HTTP server status" for hours. I installed SNMP on the management server and insight finally loaded with no problem. The installation guide only recommends installing SNMP but it seems like it's a requirement. Worked for me.
