If not, you will need to do that. Also keep in mind that SIM will install msde with sp3a for you thus eliminating the frustration of doing it yourself.

In that case, close the window and launch IE and go to http://SERVERNAME:50000. If you get a DNS or other error, the launch applet was right, the HTTP server hasn't initialized and should be troubleshooted from there.

Now when I click on the desktop shortcut I'm getting the same thing: Checking HTTP server status. with the minutes and seconds sync'ed with my clock. If I launch a browser and enter http://servername:280 it forwards to http://servername:280/login.jsp;jsessionid=(98765....) and functions properly.
I see the obvious work around, don't use the shortcut, but what's the problem and what has changed?
