snmp trap- system is unreachable

I keep getting these messages, is there any way to stop getting the emails? I would guess its an SNMP trap and all I need to do is set the trap to either informational from critical or turn off the trap. Question is what is the trap called as I can't find it?

Messages are:

Event Name: System is unreachable
Event originator: 10.10.2.84
Event Severity: Critical
Event received: 05-Aug-2004, 14:14:55
Event description: The current system is no longer reachable from the central management server, hardware status polling has marked this system as not responding

Re: snmp trap- system is unreachable

This is not an SNMP trap. It is an event created by HP SIM when a system cannot be reached by SNMP polling or a ping. Your Automatic Event Notification task probably includes this event in what it selects for the email notification. Since this is what HP SIM does when a system crashes, I would not recommend eliminating it from your notifications.

Re: snmp trap- system is unreachable

Its not a system crash as we are getting lots of these alerts every day for lots of systems, some of which I know for a fact have not rebooted or crashed, I guess its a problem with a network setting or a timeout setting?

One problem with the pinging section of HPSIM
is that you are only supposed to 2000 addresses but I have a range of 4076 as I have many subnets to ping.

Anyway I want to get rid of this as its a pain.

Re: snmp trap- system is unreachable

This sounds like your root cause is a network congestion issue. You can decrease the probability of these messages by adjusting the status polling settings under Options/Status Polling/Hardware Status Polling. Increasing the timeout and/or retries will reduce the numbr of false alarms. I would suggest starting with the number of retries.

If you are receiving emails for these alerts, this means you or someone else has created a tast to email you when a system unreachable event is generated. If you go into Options/Events/Automatic Event Handling/Manage Tasks, you can modify or delete the event from there. Be aware that once you do this, you will NOT be emailed if a device goes offline!

Re: snmp trap- system is unreachable

The message you are referring to as far as "pinging" is a caution on the Automatic Discovery page. HP SIM will handle and ping as many addresses as you want, but it can take an excessive amount of time to complete (3-4 hours in some cases with 4,000+ addresses).

Please note that with 4,075 devices to manage that MSDE is not recommended for anything beyond 500 devices for performance reasons. If you are not already doing so, SQL 2000 is the right choice for the size of your network.
