Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

I have a Win2k Server SP4 and a new external USB-DAT160. Everything works fine. The DAT is recognized in the device manager (driver installed) and the Tape Tools also found it. All Self Testes passed. But when I start the Data Protector, it didn't show the device. There will only appear my other Sony-DAT-Drive and my SCSI-CDROM, both marked as offline (they aren't offline). But not HP-DAT160. I already tried to reinstall (and used the Data Protector-35SP1 version). I also checked the License, but it seems to be the right one for DPE-SSE Edition. The Windows-Media-Changer-Service is disabled (I tried to activate but when starting DPE it automatically gets stopped and deactivated).

Any ideas why the DAT160 is not recognized by the Data Protector Express?

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

It's posible the driver is being owned by Removable Storage Manager in Microsoft services. Go into services and disable RSM to see if this helps.

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

Sorry, wrong translation. I meant the Removable Storage Manager, which is already stopped and disabled. Even, DPE will automaticall stop and disable the service. That was no working solution, sorry.

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

I've got the same problem on our Windows 2000 Server SP4 with internal USB DAT72 driver DW026A. Device manager shows the tape unit, but data protector express sse doesn't. License key is correct and ms service is disabled (by installation).

Somebody found a solution for this problem?

Extra info: the storageworks library and tape tools displays the drive correctly, the connectivity and several other tests run correctly.

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

Hi,

I have seen this before. Try the following
1. Ensure that you are using latest device drivers for the DAT in windows device manager and latest firmware

If possible reboot the server after updating the drivers and then

2. Go to the ADMINISTRATION desk bar -> click on the DEVICES view -> highlight the system to
which the drive is attached -> right click -> rescan for new devices.

3. Highlight the DEVICE view -> right click properties -> Go to the command option
Ensure the device view is selected -> under the objects, select network and then the
system name -> device and see the listing of devices.

Hope this helps

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

What do you mean with go to command option in step 3?

I've rescanned for devices several times (10 x or more) and nothing happens.

I have exactly the same issue as Antal

Windows 2000 Server SP4 with internal USB DAT72 driver DW026A. Device manager shows the tape unit, but data protector express sse doesn't. License key is correct and ms service is disabled (by installation).

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

The problem is likely a Win2K/USB problem. I don't remember all the details at the moment.

For starters, make sure you have the latest HP DAT driver installed. It is available at: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=3438737&prodNameId=3439000&swEnvOID=226&swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-47869-2

Don't just install it over the other driver. Make sure you uninstall the previous driver first. This may include going to add/change/delete programs in the control panel and removing all references to HP DAT.

After the DAT drive is visible in the Device Manager as a tape device, stop and restart the Data Protector Express service. This can be done several ways but one is to open a command window, move to the directory where Data Protector Express is installed (usually c:\program files\hp\data protector express) and executing the commands:

dpwinsvc -x

Wait about 30 seconds for the service to stop and then

dpwinsvc -s

to restart the service.

DL

p.s. The reason Michael's Sony drive and CDROM were seen but offline is because Single Server Edition (SSE) will only work with HP tape drives. Other devices are seen and configured but are not usable without upgrading to the full product.

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

I removed all DAT drivers, removed several OEM*.inf files in the inf folder to make sure it doesnt detect any other driver.

Then I installed the driver package, the drive was detected but didnt automatically get the driver assigned. I manually did a driver update with drivers in the Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP StorageWorks DAT Device Drivers.

Drive installed ok, the hpdat.sys file says version 1.5.3.2.

I restarted the Data Protector Express service, but no drive detection.

Restarted the server, but still no driver detection.

Any other suggestions? Maybe some kind of USB driver update for Win 2000?

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

Hi,
I have also an Win2K SP4 and an external UsbDat72 (DW027A).
The last firmare ZU75/HP is installed.
The last driver Hp, 1.5.3.2 is installed.
HP Tape Tools detectect an Id Product C7438A and works correctly (drive perf, test) with any problem.
But Data Protector Express Sp1 recognize only my Cdrom Drive. Why?
Thanks for your help.

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

I have tried all the suggestions but still exactly the same as Didier and Antal - tape drive not detected in Data Protector Express.

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

We have seen this basic behavior before but we have always been able to resolve it by using the DAT installer program.

If you are still having this problem, please try the following one more time. If it does not fix the problem contact your local HP support for Data Protector Express for 1:1 help.

1. Stop the Data Protector Express process dpwinsvc

2. Download and run the following application
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=501423&prodNameId=501428&swEnvOID=181&swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-47869-2

3. Restart the Data Protector Express process.

Again, if this does not fix the problem contact HP Support. See http://hp.com/go/support for your local contact numbers.

Tried this for more then 15 times now, remove driver automatic and manually, install driver, install different driver versions, removing other devices, etc.

I have checked the registry for changes when i scan for devices in data protector express with regmon, then i see a message BUFFER TOO SMALL. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

Tried this for more then 15 times now, remove driver automatic and manually, install driver, install different driver versions, removing other devices, etc.

I have checked the registry for changes when i scan for devices in data protector express with regmon, then i see a message BUFFER TOO SMALL. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Have attached the log to this message.

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

Sorry for the double message. I got an error when posting the message.

I've already called with my local HP supportdesk, they referred me to IBM (server is IBM x225). Called IBM but they refer me back to HP.

I don't actually think it's a driver problem, server problem or something else. My best guess is the Data Protector Express software, some kind of detection bug. Cause you can see in my previous post that the scan detects the DAT drive but does not add it to the devices view.

Another regmon log with filter on dpwinsdr.exe process. You can see detection of DVDRW, external drive WDC 40 GB and the DAT (C7438A).

Re: Data Protector Express SSE did not find the tape drive

SOLUTION FOUND!

Hi all, i thought i would do the same check with regmon with another client. I found that the rescan for devices was totally different on this server. It checked out te be an old version, 3.10 sp4.

So I removed the data protector 3.5 sp1 on the Windows 2000 server, downloaded the 3.10 sp4, and installed this version.
