Error-5G External Drive

I have a Winbook 300mhz Notebook with Win98 operating system. Colorado Backup II Ver 8+
5G External Travan Tape Drive. Just recently on my last backup attempt I received this error: "Unrecoverable hardware error. Insert new media to continue." Do I simply just need to replace my tape, or is this something else?
Thank You,
Curt Woody

Re: Error-5G External Drive

Try the following solutions:

Try a different tape.
Run Tape Diag prove hardware functionality.
If 5GB/8GB test in CBII v. 8.0. new copy from the web
Flash/update drive firmware.
Check memory (close TSRs), run standard scandisk and defrag.
Uninstall/Reinstall CBII software in a clean environment with no TSRs running.

Perform other troubleshooting run HP Colorado Tape Drive Diagnostic Tool

Re: Error-5G External Drive

Before you go through all the above mentioned steps:

(1) Definatley try another tape - thats the easiest one
(2) If you have another device plugged into the back of the drive - say a printer - disconnect it and try again
(3) I foyu have the notebook in a docking station - remove it and connect the drive directly to the notebook and try again
