Hi
It looks like the tape did not load properly when inserted (backup software says no tape present), but it won't unload. The "drive" LED is on.
Drive is out of warranty.
Looks like I need to try the "manual unload" procedure, but all the guides I can find start with the plastic casing removed, and Google won't show me to remove said casing. I have removed the single screw and rubber "feet/buffers" in the hope that Something Would Be Revealed but no such luck.
Can someone please advise the secret trick to safely removing the plastic casing?
Thanks, Ian

Re: How to remove plastic casing from Ultrium 6250 half-height external drive
Hi iandoug!
Near rubber dampers, on a plastic case inside the latch.
You need to gently press on the case and the latches will unhook ...
If u need photos, I can take a photo when I'm at work.

Re: How to remove plastic casing from Ultrium 6250 half-height external drive
Hi TheMoloko
Thanks, got the top part off.
I'm trying to follow this procedure which also requires the bottom cover off ... I assume I need to remove the two screws on the bottom under the sticker?
And then lever the plastic tabs on the side?

Re: How to remove plastic casing from Ultrium 6250 half-height external drive
Okay, I figured out how to release the two retaining clips and slide the drive out.
But it doesn't look like the one in these instructions
https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docLocale=en_US&docId=kc0114279en_us
There is no thumbwheel visible. I suppose I could try just turning the motor spindle underneath but they are quite pedantic about using the thumbwheel to release, and then eject...
Will see if Google can find any other guides or maybe some other kind person will post some tips.
Thanks for your help.

Except I needed a number 9 Torx not number 10.
Tape recovered, now to re-assemble and see if drive still works and if tape is okay.

Re: How to remove plastic casing from Ultrium 6250 half-height external drive
Unfortunately this is still an issue in 2024.... and the image in the old post is not viewable anymore. So I took another picture that makes clear what to do.
Step 1: Remove the small Torx screw at the back of the cover.
Step 2: Take a (not too) small flat screwdriver and lift the cover over the two latches at the back.
Step 3: Lift cover gently at the back until it unhooks at the front.
