Inventory job with backup exec 9.1 (W2K server) sp3
i have newly installed bkpexec 9.1 together with surestore 2/20. when i start bkexec software it recognized all tape partions, library and drive ok. All the tapes are shown correctly but when i try to run an inventory process, it just seem to take forever. I've left it running now for 30 hours :/ How long usually take the inventory process for 20 tapes? I have also noticed this error in the event viewer "The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
dlttape-VRTS". The library and drive has the latest HP firmware. Also my 9.1 is up2date.
Anybody has a clue whats wrong here? Isnt my library fully supported?

Re: Inventory job with backup exec 9.1 (W2K server) sp3
well inventorying Tapes should not take much longer as about 10 minutes. That's the experience I have with our surestore 2/15.
Have you tried to update your drivers for the drives in Win2K?
If not try to update them first.

Re: Inventory job with backup exec 9.1 (W2K server) sp3
I'm not much of a veritas expert, so I can't answer the question on the tape driver not loading. That might be something to check with Veritas on (or check their knowledge base).
An inventory for a 2/20 shouldn't take longer than a few minutes.
Let's divide and conquer. Can you run an inventory from the the front panel? The easiest way is to unlock the drawers and then close them. It that takes a long time, then the problem is in the library robotics.
Do you know what firmware you are on? If it's less then 1.54, you should update to 1.60. We found a problem with units that were not used often, and the brush tracks for the picker would pick up an oxide that could cause power-loss to the picker. We addressed this by adding some power-fail recovery routines, and added 25 maintenance sweeps one a day to polish the tracks.
You can used HP LTT (www.hp.com/support/tapetools) to update your firmware. Before you update the firmware however, use the support tool and save a support ticket to a file (to capture the error logs before they get cleared by a firmware update).
If the library works fine from the front panel, then I would use LTT to test out the library from the host. See if you can run the library exerciser test for starters.
Note: You need to disable/stop your backup services before running HP LTT.

Re: Inventory job with backup exec 9.1 (W2K server) sp3
for now on the inventory job has been running for 15 hours. I guess its not ok :-)
We are using Veritas 8.6 with single Surestore DLT 80 drive for the office backup and it works without problems.
I have tried to update drivers, i have tried to downgrade drivers... still having the same issue. I am able to run an inventory job from the front panel. I can load a tape into drive, this all works cool. I did update the drive firmware one week ago to 1.60. I can initialize the partions in Veritas, the software can see the library, can see the drive, does not report ANY error. However when i try to run inventory job or I try to label a tape, it gets into status running... but forever and never does the job. I guess you cant help me guys, there does not seem to be anything wrong with the library.

Re: Inventory job with backup exec 9.1 (W2K server) sp3
Try this for isolation and see the diff.
1. Make a backup/restore set without using tape device, instead try to use "backup to disk". If you found no problem using this, then the issue is more on hardware and media sides.
2. Make a backup/restore set using "NEW" and formatted media.
3. If you trying to restore a data using veritas 9.1 (that is originally comes from Veritas 8.6) it should be okay, otherwise try to restore it using older version (8.6).
4. Try to use (build 4691) BackupExecTapeDeviceDriverInstall_265501.exe
Hope this helps,
