Hi,
I have
HP LTO-6 Ultrium 6.25 TB MP RW Non-Custom Labeled Data Cartridge (20 pack) 6.25 TB HP C7976AN
Cartridges
I still have old LTO-3 RW Labels can I use them on that new LTO-6 Carts?
Even my shops have not the LTO-6 Labels. So can I use instead the LTO-5 Labels like this?
HP LTO5 Ultrium RW Automation Barcode-Labels 100 Stück - [Herst.Nr.: Q2011A]
Thx in Advance

Re: LTO-5 or 3 Label for LTO-6 Cartridge possible?
Depends on the library. Some assume the medium is of the type the label says, in other words the lib detects a LTO 3 tape and will say this cannot be used in a LTO 6 drive.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

SolutionIIRC this library will just scan the label and inventory the tapes as LTO 3 with these labels. Use the correct labels!
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: LTO-5 or 3 Label for LTO-6 Cartridge possible?
@Xenogenesis, I'm not sure exactly what your question is, but let me try to expand on this.
The MSL Tape libraries and Autoloader use the barcode label on the tapes to help identify the type of tape. Each label has a unique barcode followed my a suffix, such as L3 for LTO-3 and L8 for LTO-8. When the robot inventories the library using the barcode, it assumes any tape that has a barcode suffix of L3 is in fact an LTO-3 tape. Because of this assumption, the library will not load that tape into and LTO-2 drive (because it's newer than the drive and not supported) It also won't load into an LTO-6, LTO-7, or LTO-8 drive because they do not support media that old. It will only load into an LTO-3, LTO-4, or LTO-5 drive. The first two will read or write LTO-3 tapes, but the LTO-5 will only be able to read from the tape.
The original question was about using labels for an older technology (LTO-3) on newer LTO-6 tapes. This would be a problem because the library would assume the tapes were LTO-3 and not allow them to be loaded into an LTO-6 drive. We always recommend using labels that are correct for the media generation, and also recommend using HPE branded labels as the printing and background brightness of the labels are very important and can vary in quality from other vendors.
Hope this clears any questions up,
Barry
