Yosemite backup failing with error: 1040 No device specified or all devices are offline
Hello Expert,
I am using Yosemite server backup which I think is Data Protector express, only the name has changed.
My Server OS is windows 2008 R2 and the backup was going fine for few months.
Now suddenly from past few weeks my backup is getting failed with error as:
Error: 1040 No device specified or all devices are offline
& for tape drive is gives error as:
Invalid: Device timeout.
Earlier I used to restart the server and tape drive and it used to start working.
This time I tried
- Restarted the services of Yosemite backup
- Rescan the drives
- The drive is detected by the Operating system – but not by the backup software
- The drive was power cycled.
- Rebooted the server (this solved last time)
But the issue is not resolving. I tried to run LTT also and it show media and drives both are fine.
Any help how to resolve this issue.
Regards,
Syed

Re: Yosemite backup failing with error: 1040 No device specified or all devices are offline
The following error message, Error 1040 appears:
No Devices Specified or All Devices Are Now Offline
The possible reasons for this error can be the following:
•The device is not specified for the backup job.
•A backup device is attached to a RAID controller.
•The target device is not enabled in the HP Data Protector Express Software.
The easiest way to confirm that the job settings do not cause the error is to specify the device being used in the Properties of the backup job. For this, see the following the instructions:
1.Open the Yosemite Backup software
2.Select the Jobs and Media item in the Favorites deskbar.
3.Expand the Admin folder.
4.Right-click the corresponding job and select Properties .
5.In the Properties window of the job, select Devices and Media in the left column.
6.On the Devices and Media page, highlight the item listed in the Devices box, and select the Delete button at the bottom of this window.
7.Select the Add button at the bottom of this box.
8.Expand the Network item (click the + on the left of it).
9.Expand the name of the computer with the necessary device attached to it (click the + on the left of it).
10.Select the actual device (highlight it by clicking it once).
11.Click OK in this window.
12.Click OK in the backup job Properties window.
If a tape device that is attached to a RAID controller causes this issue, then HP does not recommend to connect tape devices to RAID controllers.
I work for HPE

Hi Aasim,
Thanks for the response. Issue resolved on its own after reboot of the hosts.
If it happen again I will try your recomended steps.

Re: Yosemite backup failing with error: 1040 No device specified or all devices are offline
Couple of years later... Had the same proplem, nothing helped so i deleted device from device manager. Refreshed it. And it is working again (did not choose delete software for this device)
