Create vlans on procurve switches

I have two switches that need to forward traffic to their respective LANs. Each is in a different subnet. They are directly connected to each other. Their IP's are:
1) 192.168.0.1/24
2) 192.168.1.1/24

Switch on the 192.168.0.x is the gateway to the router, all traffic on the 192.168.1.x switch will have to go through 192.168.0.x switch to get to the internet.

What is the most efficient way to get the two switches to forward traffic to each other? I tried to create a static route between the two but I think I messed up the commands. Any help is appreciated.
