Unknown devices appear in Device Manager

I just finished installing Win2003 on my new ML110 server and I have a few questions. The install went fairly smoothly although I did have to pull the drivers for the internal NIC card off the install CD. However my Device Manager shows 3 "unknown" devices with yellow question marks, and they are "Base System Device" , "SM Bus Controller", and "System Interrupt Controller" ?? Can someone please tell me what these devices are and where I might find the drivers?? Also when I went to the HP Knowledge Base it demanded to know "what model of ml110 I was asking about", naturally the models listed did not in anyway correspond with the numbers on my server?? Can someone please tell me how to determine what model my ml110 is , so that I can access the KB. Thanks for being there.

Wayne:

See if the detailed information at the below link allows you to determine your model number:

Re: Unknown devices appear in Device Manager

Roger, The website you suggested certainly helped determine the model, but I still need to find out what the "unknown devices" are and how to find drivers for them??

If you'll reveal the model number to us, perhaps we can help.

Re: Unknown devices appear in Device Manager

The model # from the purchase invoice is 470062-574 , which does not match any of the model #s listed on the HP website under ml110. I called my 3rd party supplier, and he said this was a "special discount model"?? The specs are somewhat close to "359664-001" , but close may not be good enough when trying to determine the right BIOS load. Thanks for the help!

Re: Unknown devices appear in Device Manager

Wayne:

The good news is that each of the eleven ML110 models listed on the support website takes the same BIOS version. The latest is 4.06.20RW and here's the link for 359664-xxx:

http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/locate/69_5769.html

After the BIOS upgrade, remember to go into the BIOS Setup program and reset to defaults, then boot WIN2K3 and see if it cleans up the device manager.

Let us know.

Thanks.

Re: Unknown devices appear in Device Manager

Roger, In the meanwhile I reached support, and after discussing the "unknown devices" they said it all related to the Intel chip set drivers. They gave me a link to the chip set drivers, which I pursued and loaded to my system. After a reboot the unknown devices were identified and cleaned up automatically in the Device Manager. I did not have to reload Win2003 Server. They also gave me the link to BIOS for the ML110, which was the same as the one you supplied. I have subsequently loaded the new BIOS. Many thanks for your help. ...Wayne

Re: Unknown devices appear in Device Manager

According to HP QuickSpecs:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11889_na/11889_na.HTML
the chipset is Intel E7210 (875P). Here's the Intel link:

Re: Unknown devices appear in Device Manager

I know this is a rather old thread, but wanted to thank those involved. I have been rebuilding this server, and as many can testify, these servers didn't come with any software, and your answers & links have been a blessing.

Re: Unknown devices appear in Device Manager

Hello Wayne, Roger !

Its not the intel chipset driver thats needed. Its the NULL IPMI controller driver.

Refer this advisory:
