Helping customers act smart at the intelligent edge

By Kap Sharma

You don’t have to be a genius to see that things are getting smarter. In fact, by 2020, there will be an estimated 20 billion smart devices worldwide. These devices are projected to capture truly amazing amounts of data, which will come from:

  • Smart cities: 250 PB per day
  • Connected factories: 1 PB per day
  • Smart stadiums: 200 TB per game
  • Autonomous vehicles: 5 TB per day
  • Smart offices: 150 GB per day
  • Smart homes: 50 GB per day

HPE Edge for Kap blog.jpg Knowing where the data comes from is easy. Knowing where it should go and getting it there is much more of a challenge. It is both inefficient and costly to send all of it back to the cloud or data center for processing (e.g., video and image analytics scenarios). In use cases that require real-time or near-real time response, it is often a deal breaker.  Further, the ML/DL/AI scenarios applied to this data and “things” increasingly need to happen in real time with low latencies.  A great example is the autonomous vehicle scenarios where every millisecond matters.

The best option – the “smart” option, if you will - is to process and analyze the data at the edge. That’s where HPE and Microsoft are focusing their efforts and where you will find impressive opportunities to build a practice and grow your business.

Partnering with HPE and Microsoft? Super smart.

Both HPE and Microsoft have seen IoT evolving and moving to the edge for quite some time. As a result HPE has focused our strategy and solutions on what we see as the most important use cases:

  • Our Hybrid IT solutions can help your customers achieve the right mix of IT from the core, to cloud, to the edge to accelerate time to value from apps and data.
  • Our Intelligent Edge solutions help your customers unleash a new generation of customer and employee experiences.
  • Our data and analytics solutions turn information from the edge and the core into insights, actions, and outcomes by applying machine learning and artificial intelligence to the data.

These combined solutions come together with HPE Pointnext services expertise to accelerate time to value and drive innovative outcomes.

Microsoft has developed a similar focus with emphasis on:

  • Intelligent Edge
  • Intelligent Cloud
  • Ubiquitous computing
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Multi-sense, multi-device experiences

With Microsoft’s focus on the intelligent edge from a software standpoint combined with HPE’s focus on the same from a hardware, networking, and services delivery angle, we have a unique partnership to light up edge scenarios.  We both work in close partnership to develop complete, proven solutions that take your customers exactly where they want to go. These are the same solutions you can count on to help you drive sales, revenue and growth. A leading example is project Brainwave that provides real time AI on the edge using HPE’s converged edge offerings.  Other examples are work around the digital prescriptive maintenance (dpm) as well as the starter kit for industrial IoT.

Intelligent edge panel slide.jpgI’ll be chairing a Luncheon Panel on the intelligent Edge next week at Microsoft Inspire – an ideal session for you to attend if you want to capitalize on the opportunities being created by IoT and AI. We’ll discuss how Microsoft and HPE are partnering to accelerate adoption of AI using Microsoft Azure IoT Edge on HPE Edgeline, allied with Aruba networking and ClearPass+ introspect security.

You’ll hear about typical IoT scenarios, such as video analytics, smart cities, smart tourism, connected factories and prescriptive maintenance that take data from the edge to the cloud and also bridge IT and OT (operational technology). Finally, we’ll give you details on the Industrial IoT Starter Kit from HPE and Microsoft that can fast-track your customers’ data, while conforming to OPC UA into Azure IoT Suite solutions, such as the Azure Connected factory.  Brainwave related work will also be shared.  To bring this all together, we will talk about how HPE Pointnext offers Edge as a Service for your global IoT implementation.

The Intelligent Edge Luncheon Panel will be held on Wednesday, July 18 at 12:00 p.m. in the HPE Hospitality Suite at Border Grill, just off the main event floor. Just register here to attend.

I also invite you to attend the session titled “HPE Edgeline and Microsoft Azure powering the Intelligent Edge” to see how you can bring transformation to your customers with HPE Edgeline Converged Edge Systems and Microsoft Azure innovation that span the edge to the cloud. The session will be repeated three times at the event:

  • Sunday, July 15: 6.30 p.m. - 7.00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, July 17: 2.00 p.m. - 2.30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 18: 4.00 p.m. - 4.30 p.m.

You can smart talk me

I’ll will be available in the HPE booth during Inspire to talk with you one-on-one about the opportunities you see in the marketplace and how the HPE – Microsoft alliance can help you transform them into wins. I’ll be joined in the booth by other experts with a combined 350+ years of combined HPE – Microsoft experience, so you’re sure to find someone who can provide the answers and direction you seek.

More information on the HPE presence and activities at Microsoft Inspire is available here. Hope to see you at the event.
