4 things you shouldn't miss from the new Living Progress Report
Today, we have access to unprecedented amounts of information about the worldโinformation which, until now, had never been fathomable. It is changing how we do things. Yet, as every sector undergoes digital transformation, IT companies have a responsibility to innovate with sustainability in mind and to apply our technologies to tackle our world's biggest social and environmental challenges.
We are proud to share the highlights of the new HPE Living Progress Report, which demonstrates how we are making progress towards our mission to sustainably meet the technology demands of the future. The report covers HPE's positions and progress on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues over the past year.
Here are the top four takeaways:
- We enhanced HPE's culture of social inclusion, equality, and responsibility
Our people are HPEโs greatest asset. Thatโs why we continue to invest in our employees including the recent launch of our Work that Fits Your Life benefits.
We are committed to building an inclusive and diverse environment because it fuels innovation. Although we recognize that thereโs more work to be done, we lead by example with one of the most diverse Board of Directors in the industry.
We are also investing in our communities through record-high engagement in our HPE Gives program. Employee matching through HPE Gives increased five times in 2018โand we distributed $5.4 million to more than 3,500 nonprofits worldwide. Additionally, we had 5,500 employees across the globe volunteer as part of Global Day of Service. - We helped customers achieve their sustainable business goals
We continue to meet and exceed our customersโ business and sustainability goals by embedding efficiency, security, and reusability throughout the lifecycle of our products. For example, HPE ProLiant Gen10 servers remained the most secure and energy efficient on the market, and our HPE GreenLake offerings saved 30% CAPEX on average, while ensuring security and on-premises control.
We also gave unneeded IT hardware a second life at HPEโs Technology Renewal Centers. In 2018, we processed 4 million units, 89% of which were refurbished and resold, returning residual value to customers while helping them meet their own IT circular economy targets. But you canโt manage what you donโt measure. In 2018, HPE launched its new Circular Economy Report, which helps IT organizations measure their contributions to corporate sustainability goals while returning value to their business when retiring end-of-use assets. - We generated revenue from sustainability-focused customer engagements
Impact on the environment and our communities are increasingly part of the criteria weโre evaluated on when competing for business. Our customers are also looking for new ways to lower their energy consumption and overcome space, power, and cooling constraints. For perspective, in FY18 we estimate that $312 million in net revenue resulted from customer engagements focused on HPEโs IT efficiency and sustainability credentials.
Investors and our Board are also taking note of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings due to risks associated with resource scarcity, fluctuating commodity prices, and increasing regulations. In 2018, HPE was the only company in our industry to receive MSCIโs AAA ESG rating, and we ranked second out of all global companies in our industry on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. - Weโre impacting the supply chain in a positive way
Our industry-leading social and environmental responsibility standards ensure we remain a trusted sourcing partner to our customers by upholding fair labor practices, responsible sourcing of minerals, and lowering the environmental impacts associated with the manufacturing. Last year, we upped the game even further by introducing more stringent supplier requirements in our social and environmental responsibility scorecard, which directly informs our purchasing decisions.
To create a long-term commercial incentive for our suppliers to reduce their environmental impacts, we have committed that by 2025 80% of HPEโs manufacturing spend will go to suppliers with science-based emissions targets in place. And in 2018, these supply chain responsibility practices earned us third place on the KnowTheChain benchmark of 40 ICT companies for efforts to address forced labor in the supply chain, as well as ranking among the top 3% of global companies on CDPโs Supplier Engagement Leaderboard.
