Tips for choosing Windows Server 2022 editions

Customers love Windows Server 2022 because itโ€™s the operating system (OS) you can run anywhereโ€”in your data center, at the edge, and in the cloud. It also offers advanced multi-layer security, hybrid cloud capabilities with Microsoft Azure Cloud, and a flexible application platform for leveraging DevOps to build and deploy applications faster.

However, there are some slight changes to the edition locks and limits compared to Windows Server 2019. Use this handy chart to identify them.

Remember:

  • Windows Server 2022 Essentials is typically for small and midsize businesses (SMBs) with basic IT needs. This edition allows for up to 25 users and 50 devices, requires no client access licenses (CALs), and is only for servers with one processor with up to 10 cores.
  • Windows Server 2022 Standard is suitable for on-premises physical environments or lightly virtualized environments that require a flexible path toward virtualization. Standard edition provides rights for up to two operating system environments (OSEs) or Hyper-V containers when all physical cores in the server are licensed. For every two additional virtual machines (VMs), all the cores in the server must be licensed again, using additional licenses. For license coverage beyond the 16 cores covered by the base OS license, or to license additional VMs, HPE additional licenses for Windows Server 2022 Standard can be purchased with new hardware or after point of sale (APOS).
  • Windows Server 2022 Datacenter is designed for companies of all sizes that have demanding IT workloads and require advanced storage, virtualization, and application deployment. Datacenter edition permits unlimited virtual OS instances and Hyper-V containers when all physical cores in the server are licensed. Windows Server 2022 Datacenter edition base licenses cover up to 16 cores. Datacenter additional licenses can only be purchased with hardware, they are not available for APOS purchase.

Licenses are available via HPE OEM Windows Server licenses and the HPE reseller option kit (ROK) distribution model, which is available to resellers who purchase IT solutions from HPE authorized distributors. Resellers can then offer HPE ROK licenses to customers along with new HPE servers and any additional services and/or products they may offer. And as always, user, device, and remote access CALs are required, based on the customer usage profile.
