4TB Logical drive

I have storage enclosure with 14 300GB drives in it, along with a SmartArray 6404. I want to create a 4TB logical drive, but it's preventing me from doing so. I was told that it was possible to create a logical drive 4TB with 28 146GB drives. I also was told that it's possible to hit 8TB with some other combination. What's the magic trick here. Does anyone know how to create that array? Does the option to pass the 2TB limit become available when you use two enclosures with a four port controller, and 28 146's?

Re: 4TB Logical drive

The max. size of a LUN you can create on a 6404 SmartArray is 2TB.

Re: 4TB Logical drive

The maximum LUN size you can create is 2TB (2.147?)

The way around it would be to create two 2TB logical drives and then use your OS or some third party software to "pool" them or create 1 big volume.

This can be done with Windows OS (and others) generically, or you can use various products like HP Openview Virtual Replicator or Veritas/Symantec Storage Foundations Suite with Volume Replicator, etc.

Re: 4TB Logical drive

Who told you that you could build a LUN larger than 2TB with the SA6404?

I have bad news I am afraid:

Look at "Maximum Logical Volume Size"

This is where I saw it. It seems to imply greater than 2TB ability. Though 'storage' could mean 4TB to 8TB via 2 or 4 2TB partitions.

Q1. What is the maximum RAID volume that can be configured with the Smart Array 6400 Controller?
A1. The Smart Array 6400 controller has been enhanced to provide support of up to 2 TB RAID volumes under some operating systems including Windows 2000. It is possible to configure a 2-channel controller with a maximum of twenty-eight 146 GB hard disk drives for a total of 4TB of storage.

Q2. What is the primary problem solved by Recovery ROM?
A2. The Smart Array 6400 controller has been enhanced to provide support of up to 2 TB RAID volumes under some operating systems including Windows 2000. It is possible to configure a 2-channel controller with a maximum of 28 hard disk drives for a total of 4TB of storage (28Ã 146 GB) and a 4-channel controller with a maximum of 56 hard disk drives for a total of 8TB of storage (28Ã 146 GB).

Re: 4TB Logical drive

That is what it means...

Up to 4TB or 8TB with a maximum of 2TB per lun (2 for 4TB and 4 for 8TB).

The controler itself will not allow you to create anything larger than 2TB.

Re: 4TB Logical drive

Have there been any advancements in the 2TB controller limitation?
