Edge Computing & its impact on the healthcare industry
The technological advancements in the global healthcare industry are hurtling at light speed. Making use of the technological edge and the rapidly increasing amount of data that can be discovered, analyzed, and applied is changing the day-to-day way medicine works. Today, edge computing devices are being used to monitor patients remotely, automate the delivery of care, bring artificial intelligence to improve the speed and accuracy of diagnoses, track the vaccine supply chain, and much more.
The healthcare industry faces some common challenges such as data management issues, limited availability of IT administration talent, a jumble of legacy computing systems, and limited budgets. Edge-computing can put things in perspective by resolving budget issues and protecting data as well as guarding it against data breaches. Read on to know why Edge Computing is considered the game-changer for hospitals and clinics around the world.
In the hospitals:
Within hospitals, edge computing and AI are enabling faster, more accurate diagnoses and automating the delivery of medicine. One of the best examples is how diabetes patients can now rely on an automated insulin delivery system that uses artificial pancreas sensors inserted under the skin to monitor blood sugar levels and transmit the data to an insulin pump and a handheld device. Algorithms inside the pump device predict where blood sugar levels are likely to be, then direct an external pump to deliver the appropriate amount of insulin. Doesn't that sound cool?
Telehealth:
Telehealth has skyrocketed in recent months, paving the way for greater acceptance of edge computing in healthcare delivery and making remote patient monitoring more accessible than ever. It has helped medical practitioners gather, store, generate and analyze critical patient data without needing to be in constant contact with a network infrastructure. With the help of edge computing technology, patients can connect over video with their healthcare providers for routine checkups, teletherapy appointments, and more.
The edge computing technology is expected to contribute significantly to healthcare systems in the coming years, and thus to have a positive impact on human health. It enables medical practitioners to get access to specific data in real-time, which helps them to make more informed decisions. These advances are changing healthcare in fundamental ways and driving toward better outcomes for both patients and providers.
