Why we need to accelerate innovation in medical imaging
Healthcare is in the middle of a data explosion as medical image resolution increases and more images are being taken per day. For IT systems in healthcare, particularly PACS, storage capacities are being stretched due to the size of medical imaging files the accelerating quantity of patients being scanned. Healthcare providers need faster ways to manage medical imaging data, and smarter ways to store it. They also need to be able to access and share the images easily, quickly and most importantly, securely. And this is where innovators like HPE and their OEM partners come in.
WHAT IS PACS?
A picture archiving and communication system (PACS) is a medical imaging technology solution that stores, transmits and retrieves electronic images and reports. PACS typically combines a healthcare original equipment manufacturerโs (OEM) software and hardware innovation with HPE technology to store images on both a short and long-term basis.
How HPE OEM solutions enable PACS:
HPE OEM Solutions already works with many innovators in this field, and we are seeing two key areas where we are helping accelerate better patient outcomes:
Tailored treatment with high-performance servers: Servers with machine learning (ML) inference engines, powered by GPUs, can scan medical images and give instant diagnostic feedback to a healthcare professional. They also enable faster and more effective analysis of larger datasets. This can help dramatically change surgical procedures by offering deeper insights that supplement the surgeonโs expertise and help them deliver more targeted treatment. HPE ProLiant servers are ideal for ML. These secure, high-performance servers allow healthcare OEMs and innovators to deliver solutions that provide deeper insight, faster.
Real-time analysis at the edge: When a healthcare professional takes a medical image, ML enables real-time analysis in the PACS. However, the huge size of these files can strain hospital networks, creating latency in sharing the images with other clinicians or sending them to storage pools for deeper analysis.
HPE OEM Solutionsโ fully integrated edge-to-cloud architecture allows OEM partners to generate timely and efficient decisions at the edge, and better analyze and connect data to deliver more accurate insight.
When healthcare OEMs and technology providers look to the future, the benefits of leveraging the latest technology innovations from HPE can include:
- More time for clinicians to focus on patients and quality care.
- Quicker, easier retrieval and sharing of images and reports.
- Improved security, high performance and reliability.
- Efficiency and environmental improvements.
