hpux physical to hp virtual machine migration

I am trying to find a way to migrate a physical machine to a virtual machine :

- Source : hpux 11iv2 installed on an RX7640 server
- Target : hpvm guest running on superome sd2 hardware partition.

I looked for a whitepaper or document describing a way to do this but could not find any.
Not sure if ignite backup/restore can help with this.

Read the Appendix A in doc:

but does tell if an ignite backup of a physical machine can be used as a virtual machine image.

Re: hpux physical to hp virtual machine migration

Ignite backup and restore can be used for migrating P2P, P2V, V2P and V2V. Before you will do ignite you will need to install VMGuestLib compatible with HPVM host.

Re: hpux physical to hp virtual machine migration

Bonjour,

If your source system disk is accessible from both the RX7640 and the sd2 nPar, then check my view of the process here http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Virtualization/OS-upgrade-for-Integrity-VM-and-retaining-older-OS-as-virtual/m-p/4740442#M2680 .

If the source system disk is not shared, you can create a DRD clone of the source system disk on the SAN, boot the RX7640 from it, aply some updates (guestlibs, avio, etc ...), stop the RX7640 then begin the process of starting a VM on the SD2 with the modified DRD disk of the 7640. Not so simple, but the idea is there.

Also "man p2vassist". Don't know if it is relevant, because I recently found it and have never tested this approach.

Hi,

Ignite restore will work ( even golden image if you have ). Install VMGuestLib compatible with HPVM host on target server.

Re: hpux physical to hp virtual machine migration

According to the HPVM release notes the guest MUST be

HP-UX 11i v2 0712
or
HP-UX 11i v3 1009

see

Table 1-1 Guest and VM Host Support

in this document.

HP Integrity Virtual Machines 4.2.5: Release
Notes

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
