As Mark said, you have to find out where the directory went. Did your automounter go south?
Or the NFS server died?

What sort of workstation is it? In the C3000 series that I use you can see the discs if you remove the front cover. If your set up is like this, can you see a disturbance light on the disc?
Do you have a maintenance contract and a backup? If so, it may be time to invoke them.
