No MAC address label on server

Hi,

We have a brand new out of the box hp9000 rp3410. I am reading the manual on configuring the IP-Address.

On page 83 of "Installation Guide" of HP 9000 rp3410, section "Configure an IP Address", step 1,it says "Determine the Media Access Contol(MAC) address of the MP LAN interface by viewing the label located at the rear of the server".

Now there are no labels on the server that contain a MAC address. All I see are "Chassis no, serial no, model number, etc".

There are no labels that contain a MAC address or even have an IP-Address.

How do I configure the IP now?

Thanks

Re: No MAC address label on server

Can you try:
1. Connect
2. Enter CM to get to Command Menu
3. Enter LS for Lan Status.

Re: No MAC address label on server

Thanks for the reply.

I didn't understand what you replied. From where will I choose "Connect"?

This server has no monitor.

I think what I need to do is connect the LAN cable to the local LAN point, then add the MAC address of the server printed on the label of the server to the ARP table.

Then I will be able to telnet to the Server & configure it.

Is this correct?

Re: No MAC address label on server

Hi,

if you still not found the MAC address, take a notebook and a null modem cabel, connect them together, run hyperterminal or putty (serial connection, speed 9600) and try to get access to the MP.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: No MAC address label on server

thanks a lot.

I have connected to the "console/remote/ups" port from server to my PC.

In Putty the "baud" is set to 9600 and "serial line to connect to " is set to COM1.

Powered on the server & when I hit OK in putty, it's not going to the next screen.

Any ideas why??

thanks
Torsten.

Re: No MAC address label on server

Did you use a null modem (or 9-pin printer) cable between the black W cable (console port) and your PC?

Hope this helps!

Re: No MAC address label on server

Did you connect your PC's serial port to the correct port on the 3 cable dongle ? Let me ask it a different way, did you get what so called a pigtail dongle with your system, which converts a D-25 connector on your system to 3 separate D-9 type connectors ? Make sure you have connected your serial cable to one of the three D-9 connectors labeled as CONSOLE, not UPS or REMOTE.

Make sure your cable is NOT a null-modem cable

Make sure your comm setting on the PC side are 9600,n,8,1

Hope this helps

Re: No MAC address label on server

From the MP menu, type CM to go to the command menu.

From the 'MP:CM>' prompt you can type 'help' to go into help mode and then type 'list' to get a list of available commands.

The 2 commands you are probably interested in are 'LC' to configure the LAN port and 'DNS' to configure DNS if you want to.

together with not knowing what error you got but are you sure your windows PC is on the same VLAN or subnet in other words, with the MP LAN port of your rp3410 ? If they are not, arp will most probably fail.
