Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

I'm back! Haven't been able to use my shortcuts for about two weeks. Don't know what you guys did to keep them from working but I was able to get to the forum by drilling down from hp.com. Just couldn't reply. Kept getting the forum is too busy message where it says you are going to add servers or sometimes just the page can not be found or server must be down errors. Finally got smart and logged out (which took 3 tries before it worked) and then logged back in. Now I can reply again tho my shortcuts don't still work. Thought I'd post this in case there is anyone else left out in the cold.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

Wodisch/Jasper (and others),

Which extension, if any, did/do you use for attached binary files?

In my experience, certain browsers which shall remain nameless :-), do not conform to the required protocols but (mis)judge things based on the extension of the file, i.e. if it is .exe (Did I just name the nameless browser? :-)) they consider it binary.

As a test, I have attached junk.exe, which should say (with "od -bc"):

0000000 F r a n k S l o o t w e g
106 162 141 156 153 040 123 154 157 157 164 167 145 147
0000016

(probably your browser or/and a proportional font will mess this up)

I.e. ASCII, but no linefeed or carriage-return, i.e. 'binary'.

Well, that (my 'binary' junk.exe attachment) did not work! Sorry.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

Dan,

Still cannot seem to get a search to complete from ITRC page when clicking "Manuals" today.
Can get searches by going to

http://www.docs.hp.com/cgi-bin/otsearch/hpsearch

Still trouble with the front page?

Jeff

Hey Frank,

It's probably your nameless browser that screwed it up ;)

Later,
Bill
It works for me (tm)

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

Hi Jeff...the docs area is managed by another team. I've forwarded your message to them - if I hear what the problem is, I'll let you know.

Ron, what you have described is odd. Let me look into it and get back to you via email.

Frank, thanks for your attempt at solving the attachment issue.

Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

Hi Frank,

seems like you haven't got as many *free* bytes as I have got ;-) - but my (nameless) browser shows the extension ".txt" NOT ".exe"...
And AFAIK the attachments dod not work for some now (again), regardless of extension (we tried ".zip", and ".pdf", at least).

Dan,

can your web-masters investigate on this? If they are able to pass binary attachments, which browser do they use?

Wodisch

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

Dan,

Just got a 200 error "service unavailable" on login @ 11:00 CDT.
Was able to get in 5 minutes later when I next tried.

Jeff

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

Wodisch, I'll definitely find out what I can regarding the binary attachments and report what I find.

Thanks,

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

Getting to be a real pain. Every time I want to get on the forum I have to drill down from hp.com (even tho the URL is exactly the same as my shortcuts) then logout and if it lets me logout(which it usually doesn't - except late at night) then if I log back in I can post replies otherwise I either get the "site not found" error screen or the one which says the forum is too busy.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

Re binary attachments:

Perhaps, until the problem is found and fixed, we can go 'back' to using good 'old' shar(1), i.e. (implicitly) uuencode(1)/uudecode(1). They might also give problems (with extra characters), but those are probably easy to solve. When creating the shar, use (at least) "-cs" (and do *not* use "-a").

As a little test, I will attach a shar (junk.shar.txt) of my previous junk[.exe] file. I also used options "Cmo", and copied the file as 'binary' (i.e. UNIX text format, not 'DOS' text format) before attaching it with my browser.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

That, junk.shar.txt, worked!

When saved, the file has two extra lines (one with one tab and one with two tabs) at the beginning, but it can still be un-shar-ed, provided that the 'DOS' text file is converted to a UNIX text file (for example via dos2ux(1)), otherwise un-shar-ring will fail with things like:

> junk.shar.txt: ^M: not found.

For those not familiar with shar(1) archives, just read the instructions *in* the archive, i.e. "more junk.shar.txt".

I hope this helps.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

Hi Dan,

I've just replied to a message ( http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x71747d4cf554d611abdb0090277a778c,00.html ). When I've pressed the submit button, nothing really happened. I didn't get the html window with 'Thanks for your contribution and so on'. I thought there was a connection issue again. I've opened a new browser, went back to the same message (took some time to connect) and then I saw my message was posted 3 times.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

Frank: thanks for helping with the attachements issue. See next for more info...

Wodisch: there's a possibility that bytes are getting added to binary attachments which can cause problems. I was able to attach and open a .exe fine. I will inform the developers to look at this. In the meantime, an option is to zip any binary files before uploading. Refer to this test post where a .class file (Java byte code) was uploaded, yet doesn't open. In the reply, the attached zip file with the same .class file opens fine.

Kurt: sounds like there was a network hang during or after the submission. Not sure why the 3 postings were made. I went ahead and removed the two additional posts.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

Hello Dan, Jeff, the ITRC-team and all of you "out there in the wild",

still trying to present my part of the statistics in time ("procura" is perhaps already wating for the list ;-), but again I am running into problems with the "j" members page and even the "m" memebers page :-(
Don't what that "SSI" error is about, but annoying it is!

Well, so I'll start without "j" and "m" (by using the data from previous month):

PRELIMINARY:

20403 Existing Forumers
3684 Active Forumers
3399 Newbies
88 Pros
88 Graduates
62 Wizards
37 Royalties
6 Pharaohs
2 Olympians

So, since the coronation of the (formerly) mighty wizard "Carlos de Espana" (as you see: having failed in latin in school means that my "spanish" is even worse) we are getting close to 50 royals, god-likes, and even-betters - we must already outnumber the royals in the UK!

Is HP able to afford that much of us?
And now a german university seem to make a study about "communities" like us...

We are more or less patiently waiting for these wizards to outgrow their pointy hats:
#46 CA483573 2337 Sachin Patel
#47 BR641751 2332 Steven Gillard
#48 BR63572 2314 Volker Borowski

And to compensate for the loss of adepts, there are some graduates working on their wizard-ship:
#108 CA393246 993 Dave Wherry
#109 BR178691 982 Eugen Cocalea
#110 BR29930 979 Wim Rombauts
#111 CA609055 973 Printaporn
#112 CA615708 971 Ken Chahley

Here are those of us "soon-to-be-squared":
#197 CA460479 497 Kapil Raj
#198 BR168043 493 Kodjo Agbenu
#199 CA739512 477 Greg Carlson

And many are almost there - to receive their first "hat":
284 CA512020 248 Bob Inglis
285 BR191712 244 Frank
286 CA206693 240 Charles McCary
287 BR682414 236 David Burgess
288 BR638875 234 Raymond Crijnen
289 CA452087 227 Rob Mallard
290 CA469133 227 Jeffrey S. Sims
291 BR182499 226 Oliver Haensel
292 BR184021 223 Stefan Saliba
293 CA364647 223 Bill Costigan

Attached is the sorted list of all "pointers" (all of us having earned at least one point), with rank, points, ids, and (nick)names.
I have to write "nickname" as we seem to have some hollywood-movie-heroes around ;-)
Hey, who is going to deliver THAT statistics? How many *real* names vs. *other* names we have???

Have a calm and sunny may,
Wodisch

Wodish, as of when are these statistics? They are *old* (unless I loose 800 points in a single day). My renewed stats tomorrow ... (also without m and j)

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

David Reno posted the wrong thread, and I blindly reacted on the wrong message. Sorry guys!

David, I had the same problems. Opera (my first choice of browser) only works (and works well) if used identifying as IE5.

Mozilla-1.1a works fine (and IIRC, so does Mozilla-1.0) Mozilla-0.9.8 (and I think 0.9.9) have problems with the forum

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2002!

Pete,

As far as I know, that is what happens when we (Dan and us "HP employee" types) delete a post. How did you find/see it? I didn't see it on the (hp-ux -> system administration) index pages (of May 30).

To *all*,

For all *other* issues: As mentioned please do not use this thread (which is for April), but the June one <>. Thanks.
