Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - August 2002

Re: My earlier response about getting REQUEST_INVALID when posting responses.

I wonder if that is some *general*, possibly *browser*, issue. Why? Let me explain:

For a long time I have problems with the ITRC search facility. When I get a list of results (I only searched in the Forums) I can only display *one* result *once*. After that, trying to display any result, including the *same* one, gives an error.

Now my point: I *thought* that the error was a "page not found" (or similar), i.e. HTTP 404, error, but when reading closely, it actually was a REQUEST_INVALID error, i.e. the same one as I got when posting.

So I tried the same workaround, Refresh, and that works, i.e. I can display each result by click -> REQUEST INVALID -> Refresh -> page is displayed correctly.

So my advice to you all is when reporting problem to carefully check *which* error you get and mention the exact error in your problem report. I.e. please do not just say "page not found" (or similar), because that is too ambiguous.

Does anyone know if this, REQUEST_INVALID, could be a browser issue, and if so, how to fix it? FWIW, I use Internet Explorer 5.00 on Windows.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - August 2002

Hi Dan-
Clarification:
Someone did indeed award points to a response, but as you noted, I have no idea which response. Possibly, after a given amount of time, we could drop off any responses from a profile that rated less than 8. This would help in a follow up.
At times the author is kind enough to note what worked/did not from a reply. I find this very useful in that it often leads to an enhancement of a suggestion offered which helps improve our environment as well.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - August 2002

Patrick, the user you pointed out is using chinese characters (in their profile) which aren't recognized by the ITRC forums. This is why the bogus user name.

Procura, thanks for the note on the search...I'll get that reported.

Dave, thanks for the clarification and suggestion.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - August 2002

Hi Dan,

today I had message rather new to me when trying to "reply" to a thread:
maximum nuber of redirects exceeded
Wow! Even reposting did not work... After exiting my "Netscape7.0PR1" and restarting it, it did work, finally.
But I *was* logged in, when it happened (as I am usually), my (american) id was shown. The only thing different from other days was that I had visited the "partners.openview.hp.com" site (logged in there, and to "HP Passport", too) - maybe "fighting cookies" or such?
Oh, and the search did NOT work, then! I searched for "dirbk" and NOTHING was found...
It works now, as it should.

Strange!

Wodisch

Hi,

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - August 2002

Alan, you got the same as me. You probably call from Europe (my database tells me you're from Ireland) and the link redirects you to the US. European cookies don't work on US links and vise-versa

Sometimes it works if you change the link manually from http://us-support2.external.hp.com/... to http://europe2.external.hp.com/... but it may as well not work (as I noticed lately)

Wodisch, Alan and Procura, strange behavior indeed. I've got this reported into the support teams to see what they can uncover. Apologize for the incorrect redirects and error messages. Thanks again for reporting it.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - August 2002

Dan,

Interesting phenomenon:

I was attempting to submit a question and hit the enter key after filling in the subject line. I was taken to the thanks for .... but don't forget to assign .... page like the question had been posted. I selected the back to my question button to go back and actually fill in a question, which I did. When I posted that, I received an e-mail notification that someone had responded to my question, yet I still couldn't see it (and still can't). I clicked on the link in the e-mail message and was brought to my question but it had no subject line. I put a note in it, begging people to not respond to it because I can't find it. I even tried the link off my profile and it doesn't show up there. Interesing!

Reposting the question with a proper subject and question worked just fine.

Jeff

That would be fine - I just didn't want a question hanging around that I couldn't find to assign points to responses.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - August 2002

Sachin, can you describe exactly the steps you took that caused that URL to be displayed?

Pete, you can submit a question with only a subject line (no text). You will get the acknowledgement page you mentioned. However, going back, filling in text, and getting an email notification is a new one one me. Thanks for reporting it. By the way, we deleted your bogus postings.

Victor, I'll check on your valid user information and send it to you.

Hi Dan,
Overall the forum is MUCH easier to use vs. 3 months ago.

The only intermitent problem I've been having to assign points more than once on several occasions because they didn't show up after the initial assignment.

Keep up the good work!

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - August 2002

Hi Dan,

I'm currently getting the same problem that Procura and others reported recently (getting redirected to the US site when trying to search using a BR account).

I was also using the forums earlier today (approx 4 hours or so ago), and at that time, searches were not giving a problem.

The only difference is that earlier, I was connected from work, and now I'm connecting via my ISP.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - August 2002

Hi Dan,

since I was silent here (for days!) here comes a new complaint ;-)
Markus attached something interesting (my guess) over there:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xd90957bd90a9d611abdb0090277a778c,00.html
but it is not simply damaged (as happened quite often), but inaccessible!
Could you check and repair that, please?

Thanks a lot,
Wodisch

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - August 2002

Hi Dan,

More of a suggestion than a complaint....

Would it be possible for the system to open a totally NEW browser window when you click on a link?
It tends to grab another IE window already in use & it may be one that I don't want navigating somewhere else. I cannot determine just which window it will grab ahead of time - it just grabs one. Then I have to go to that window & "Back" it to where it was prior.

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues - August 2002

Jeff,

Re: opening a totally NEW browser window when you click on a link.

While I think that for *other* similar cases, there are *OS*, i.e. Windows, settings for this [1], I think this particular case is indeed an issue for the ITRC Forums UI.

As a *workaround*, you can *right*-click (assuming right-handed) the link and then do "Open in New Window" instead of "Open".

[1] See the "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" setting under Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Advanced.
Note that this is under "Internet Options" of the *Control Panel*, not "Internet Options" *in IE" (under "Tools"). The Control Panel one also affects other programs, like the e-mail client Outlook. I do not know if the IE one also affects other programs.
