Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for December 2002!

Looks like more widespread timing issues this morning Dan.

There is a post which has remained at the top of the HP-UX family list for a good 15-20 minutes this morning while other posts are changing their order underneath it. The top post has not had the number of replies change.

This is really starting to get annoying.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for December 2002!

I often joke with my contacts at HP.

Put ITRC on a superdome with lots of memory and as much band witdth as you can afford.

We have an excellent fast connection to the net(traceroutes provided upon request), and we frequently get a very slow response when clicking, both in the forums and when managing calls.

I would like to be able to revise idiodic mistakes I occaisionally make in my posts. My typing frequently makes me look stupid.

I don't know if its germaine, but I'd like to be able to close support calls electronically. Thought I can't stand oracle support, there is a close call button in there and I can make annoying Oracle people go away.

Not that anyone at HP EVER annoyed me.

Oh yes, the url's in the forums and support calls are REALLY long and hard to cut and paste. There must be a way to simplify that. Maybe not.

Hi Dan,

I know you must be tired of hearing about the timing issue so here's something different for you.

It's taking just about 10 seconds to submit a response - way too long, I think. It must be waiting while it dreams up a random time stamp to assign to the response (sorry, couldn't resist).

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for December 2002!

Hi All,

Looks like you've all gotten together to get me a nice gift for the holidays -- lots of replies to this thread! :) It does beat a lump of coal.

Patrick - the timing issue was reported to the support team. This was introduced when we tripled the forums capacity by adding additional servers/memory. More steps were taken to resolve this, so I expect it to go away.

John - thanks, I passed along your words of wisdom to the support folks.

Pete & Michael - appreciate the pointers.

Procura - I'll report this...please play nice.

Tom & Vicente - thanks for letting me know...I'll look into it.

Steven - great ideas. I will include these on the request list for enhancements.

Joanne - your idea is a good one. I'm working with the search folks to see what we can do in other areas to improve it as well.

Thanks again to everyone for your feedback. I will be out next week, but please post here if needed and I'll see your messages upon my return.

Happy Holidays!

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for December 2002!

Hello,

I'm sure this has already been voiced, but I'd like to as well.

I just responded to a post about booting from vg00s mirror and apparently I was the first one to answer. However, 3 others have posted since and I've been bumped to the 4th position, which is weird to say the least.

I guess I'm reiterating the need for a more reliable network time source for the forums.

Thanks for your time

Chris

Chris, did you "see" your reply posted in the first position and then go back awhile later and see it was 4th?

Thanks,

Hi Dan,

the attachments still leave some fun for "tweaking" the URLs to us, the reader...
The newest example I found is missing the server and the closing part of the JavaScript statement:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x56be7680e012d71190050090279cd0f9,00.html
Not too difficult, ok, but kind of, hm, unneccessary, isn't it?

My Xmas present for your web-designers ;-)

Merry Xmas to you and your team,

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for December 2002!

Dan,

I got HTTP 404 file not found errors trying to reply to Chris Fung's post at http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x67c27680e012d71190050090279cd0f9,00.html I tried 3 times, then gave up. Happened just now, BTW.

Hope it helps

John.

Then after the first 2 failures, I checked the message, and the post did not happen. After the 3rd, went back to the HPUX home, and saw that the post had 4 replies. All 3 of my posts went through...

Dan
Greetings!

This thread below had a reply for which 8 points was assigned,
but the bunny hat did not come up.

Only during the second 10 point assignment the bunny showed up on the post

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for December 2002!

Hi Dan,

I've got the same problem with posting an answer at http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x90c07680e012d71190050090279cd0f9,00.html

After the first two attempts in posting, I've always got a timeout and the thirth time I went through. But of course the answer is posted three times. The same problem as John Payne described.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for December 2002!

Dan,

I'm not sure what's going on with these posts

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x93ca7680e012d71190050090279cd0f9,00.html

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x17c87680e012d71190050090279cd0f9,00.html

But the first states that it's been moved but appears to point back to itself...or possibly the earlier post...no way of telling as these lovely redirects just point to the page. When I posted this, these msgs were literally together in the HP-UX section.

Rgds,
Jeff

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for December 2002!

I would like to see the forum user lookup search engine improved -

I would like to see a search geographically, by state, or zip - to further collaborate.

Also - just looking up profiles, my own for instance - i.e. enter my name to find my public profile.

Right now, its a scroll down the alphabet type thing.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for December 2002!

Dan,

Please take this as slightly tongue in cheek, but mostly seriously.

Why do you have a search function called "exact phrase" that doesn't even come close to searching on the exact phrase?

Today I searched on a 5 word phrase and got back results that had only ONE word anyware in the document, much less anything close to the phrase.

The search function has long been a bane to this site, and in my opinion is the weakest part of the ITRC. Often the search is so worthless that I use google to search for ITRC posts because I get better results over using your search function.

I wouldn't think a search function would be difficult to develop, especially since most search engines will license their product for use on your site.

If you guys can't get yours to work right, and I'm not confident you can, then please, please buy someone elses search that does work.

Thanks for hearing my vent.

Sean
