Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hi Dan,

I'm still getting intermittent problems with the search function. Yesterday I searched for stm, I got no results. I re-clicked on the search button & got 50 results found.

Yesterday evening (European time) the ITRC was *SOO* slow that I was unable to post this issue :/ That's why I post it now, just to let you know.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

I agree with Hilary, the search function is BROKEN again.

I did a boolean search on this string:

hardware AND time AND server AND NTP

had the following areas clicked:

Technical documents, Manuals, and ITRC Forums

and I got links to items that did NOT have the word hardware in them! I even searched the raw source of the page, yet no "hardware", as in this page:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xc3b23a7b3682d611abdb0090277a778c,00.html

It's definitely ignoring the FIRST word in the boolean expression, as I changed the search string to this and it worked:

stupid AND hardware AND time AND server AND NTP

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hi Harry:

Yes, you have nailed it, The Forum's 'search' has always been "stupid" :-))

Seriously, folks, the problem with the Forum search returning nothing or more usually returning documents absolutely devoid of logically ANDed conditions has been a long-standing problem.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Dan,

I'm really glad to hear you've enlisted some additional servers to help with the load because it just took me 2 minutes and 25 seconds to load this thread (10:25 AM EST).

What happens out there in California every morning around 7:00 AM PST? Do you have a janitor that comes through and unplugs half the servers so he can vacuum or what? ;^)

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

How about a little database in ITRC where those of us that need to earn extra income can register for a little side work?

I love helping people here and always will, but sometimes people here have problems that require some real time.

I know HP will do it for $250 an hour but not everyone can affordd that. Though technically competition for HP, I'll make the following argument:

Anyone hiring me off the forum(One person did track me down for a two hour phone consult) is going to get the following advice:

You need a hardware contract
You need a software contract

If you are using HP-UX for any kind of production application, you have to have support.

So, if HP helps facilitate people like me making a little spare change, I think you'll see a decent chunk of change from support contract sales. I also try and steer people toward HP hardware for HP-UX boxes, so you can use HP as a one stop solution center. HP makes money off that too.

Relavent? Not sure. I'd love to be able to have a link in my profile that can help me and HP earn a little more money.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hi Dan,

I'm not even going to whine about this question of mine getting moved (I knew it would)

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x5276ef70e827d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

but I would like to know why I haven't gotten any notifications. It started out with, and still has, notification enabled yet I've received absolutely nothing about the two replies that have been posted.

In the dark, as usual,
Pete

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hi Dan,

This is reiterating a request I've made in the past.

I've noticed a few instances again recently of someone apparently clicking on the "New Message" button when they should more than likely be clicking on the "Reply" button on a thread.

So my request is this: Can we eliminate the "New Message" button from being displayed if you are reading a message? That way your only choices are "Notify me" or "Reply". I don't think it would be a hardship to only be able to do "New Message" from Family Home or Category HOme pages. Maybe renaming the button would help this too? Call it "New Thread" instead of "New Message" so maybe it is more obvious that that button starts a whole new thread?

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

I'd like an interface to upload documentation.

I think I've typed my get ready for oracle post lots of times. Earned lots of points for it, but would rather it were an hp doc I could link to.

I'd like to have pictures which is why pointing back to old itrc posts doesn't work.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Dan,

It sucks MAJOR wind that when I want to access parts of the ITRC that require a support contract I have to log off my Americas handle CA486125 and change sites and then log back on using my European handle BR628658. When I want to answer questions I have to reverse the process and sign on to the Americas using using my Americas handle.

This is particularly bad when I'm trying to answer some poor sysadmin's question that requires a peek into the knowledge base. (I don't suppose you'd be willing to give me access to the sections requiring a support contract on my America's Id now would you?)

How many of us are out there with Id's on both sites?

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Is it just my internet connection or have these forums gotten terribly slow in the last hour?

I hate to have 2 minute window refreshes.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hi Dan:

Response time for the Forums is absymal this morning. I'm seeing 15+ seconds to pop open a thread or simply refresh the HP-UX page. The slowness is confined to the Forum and nothing else.

Regards!

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

It seems to be transient as sometimes I get a fast page load and sometimes it takes 2 minutes.

But it has gotten a bit faster in the last 5 minutes.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Just a warning to any Window Box users. I downloaded the latest version of Windows Media Player 9.0 last night and this morning was having problems getting on the forum (Win2K SP3 IE6 SP1). It even forgot my login. (Wasn't just the forum several other websites would just hang.) Seems WMP 9.0 plays with your IE Privacy settings and even putting hp.com in the unrestricted list did not help since it was still denying cookies (because it can't find a privacy policy on the site). Finally just set Privacy down to where it accepts all cookies and things are working nicely again. It still complains but it is working.

Things are slowing down here too, but not along the line. Reading is still above avarage, but replying sometimes takes ages.

Hi Dan,

no login possible yesterday the whole day and today in the morning.
The response time was too long for my proxy-server and so I only was able to read, but not to reply.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Dan

I am not sure if this problem is on the HP side or my local firewall but I am receiving an awful lot of HTTP:404 Not Found errors when
I try to access the site. This doesn't happen all the time but it does happen consistently in the mornings EST 8-10AM.

Is this possibly an issue with the servers being too busy at that time?

I also am getting page not found messages when I try to post a reply to a thread, again not all the time but enough times where I have to refresh and try again.

Thank you and keep up the good work here.

Dan,

Morning doldrums again!!

I've been trying for the last 15 minutes (since 10:15 AM EST) to get into the Forums at all. I don't have any timings for you because I was trying the stop and reload trick. Eventually got to this question via a bookmark.
