Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Welcome back!!!

From my end, the ITRC was down from 8AM EST on Saturday Jan 25th until 11AM today [Tue Jan 28th]. Ouch! That's about a 75 hour outage.

I guess we shouldn't complain so much any more about the slowdowns and the time sync problems! :)

I look forward to hearing what happened. Thanks to whoever got it all working again.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Dan,

I submitted an issue to HP via one of the web feedback pages and was told that noone had reported any problems with the ITRC Forums! If you look at page 1, you can see, however, that noone has posted anything since January 25th - until just now.

I was going through Forums withdrawal!!

Has the ITRC heard of the five 9's. Maybe it's time to get rid of the NT machines.

I also submitted a request to the ITRC response center about an hour ago and what do you know it's back up now.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

The timing issue is back, too. Mine was the first response after John Payne, now John Poff, and Jeff Schussele have "jumped in" ahead of me - and look at Jeff's entries: they echoed at different times!

Pete

At least the forum's back, though.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Ya know,

I avidly preach to all of my customers that HP-UX (and any other UNIX for that matter) is far greater than NT. NT has never had 5 nines, and neve will!

How about my consulting firm give HP a quote on converting the forums from NT to HP-UX or Linux?

I guess on the plus side, you guys just made UNIX look that much better to the whole forums community, at the price of lots of respect.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Ok. I was wrong. I will complain again about the time sync problem. :)

It looks like it is back. See this thread:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xd1225bd3782dd711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

It doesn't seem like such a big problem now after going three days without the forums.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hi All,

Well, we were getting slammed over the past 3 days, hence the forums and the ITRC in general were not available. Obviously, the support team has got the site up now. Same goes for the forums search. Apologize for the inconvenience. I'll report the time synch problem...again.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Dan: I appreciate all your work on keeping this zoo running, and in dealing with all the (mostly legit) carping. I'm sure you understand that it is (mostly) all part of our collective effort to generally improve the already top forum on the planet.

Having said that, I have some requests:

1> I have two IDs. Can somebody delete the old one with the fewest points (the lowest ID number)? I can't delete it myself, or I would.

2> I don't often post questions, but had occasion to this month. In both cases, as I assign points, it always takes me two tries. Always. The first effort "takes" OK, but when I check the post, everyone I gave points to comes back "unassigned". I try it again, and, poof, the points appear. This has happened in every case, on different (5-6) days, different times. Is this happening to anyone else?

3> I agree with Jim, the little "survey" that has been popping up for the last two months is starting to irk. I've filled it out, thanks, now make it go away. I don't mind it, in fact, it was a good idea. Expected behavior, however would be that it would only appear till I filled it out, and then it would never show up again. Talk to somebody.

4> Request for Enhancement: When I search, I would like to see the "rabbit" next to answers that got a rabbit. It would help as I wade through the 50-100 returns from a search.

5> 2nd Request (dogpile on this one, it has come up in many posts): make the "reply" window bigger!! I should be able to see my reply as it will look in the actual post. It is really hard to make sure the reply "works", if you are pasting in long URLs or command lines or log entries, etc.

6> One more for the tag/formatting request, it would help with formatting too, like having a full width window.

On the whole, this thing is great! Thanks again... --bmr

For all: Opera 7 is out to the public. Not very suitable for the Forum, since it took me 5+ attempts to post this one

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hi Dan!
So glad you're back!
Got the disconnect this morning and knew the worm must have hit you guys hard.

I have a little side-note.
I am using NT4 SP5 with and IE 5.5 browser.
Java is enabled.

When I right-click on a link and attempt to open it in a seperate window, I get a java error:
javascript:go ToMaintainer ('common/bin/doc.pl/forward/');

Is this a tweak I meed to do on my end or something that needs addressing? I have never in my recollection, been able to do this.

It would be nice to keep one page open and get to another without opening another Explorer page and hunting the second page up.

Thanks,
Kel

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hi Dan,

nice to see the forums up, again.
Too bad there is no HP product like "IPFilter/9000" for Windows...
That could have saved the past few days :-)

But to see forward, I've got a new "YAER": some other communities I am active on do have a feature called "preview": you can see your posting as it will appear on the *real* forums pages, but you still have the chance to fix something (typos, e.g.).
I would *love* to have that feature here, and maybe other could use it, too.

FWIW,

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Was it really the sql slammer that did us in? I was under the impression that itrc was on an HP box running apache.

Did the worm just jam up the network really bad or was the effect direct?

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Kelli, thats not a browser or OS issue. You just can't open those little javascript links to another window. All you can do is click.

In general they open a new window though.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Stephen - Unfortunately, the Forums are on NT boxes running Vignette Story Server if I remember correctly.

Also, on the browser issue and clicking on the links, with all MS IE versions I've worked with the link will open in a new window when you click on it. The same goes for Opera, I think.

That feature does NOT work in Netscape though. If you click the link in Netscape it will open in the same window. The only workaround I've come up with is to just copy the URL and past it in a new window if you are using any version of Netscape.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Brian....regarding your #3 question, if you just closed the survey window then it doesn't think you have seen it. If you declined or took the survey, and then later cleared your cookies, then getting the survey again is normal behavior. But if you declined, and didn't clear your cookies, then there is a problem. I've reported it to the ITRC survey team.

I'll see if your second userid can be deleted.
Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for January 2003!

Hi Dan:

Patience pays. I *finally* got a "satisfaction survey" to which I could respond. As you would guess, respond I did; positive and negative; high marks for the ITRC and the Forums concept but a very clear call for hardware and software that's bullet-proof. Oh, and lest I forget, a plea to implement NTP. Now, lt's see if Carly cares.

Regards!
