VxVM and vg00

Hi Guys

Im looking for a black and white answer *grin*

We are considering buying another L class, running HPUX 11.00, for a number of reasons we are also looking at Veritas Volume Manager, what I need to know is do I still need to buy MirrorDisk/UX to mirror my root disk or can VxVM do this for me??

Everything I have read so far indicates that vg00 must still be a LVM volume group which in my mind says I need Mirror/UX

Thanks

Steph

Re: VxVM and vg00

If you want to mirror vg00, you'll need to purchase MirrorDisk/UX as well as Advanced VxVM since mirroring is an extra cost product for both volume managers.

Hello,

As of 09/02 (September 2002) CDs, you now CAN install HP/UX on VxVM. I've tried it with success!

Re: VxVM and vg00

hello,

Vincent (farrugia) was right, still HP-UX september 2002,
there is no need to use another disk for VxVM "rootdg", you 'll need to choose this solution at the install time.
You could also use LVM with this configuration!.
After the installation completion, a "bdf" looks like:

Filesystem kbytes used avail %used Mounted on
/dev/vx/dsk/rootdg/rootvol
204800 101800 102296 50% /
/dev/vx/dsk/rootdg/standvol
295024 61240 204280 23% /stand
/dev/vx/dsk/rootdg/varvol
2609152 930280 1666824 36% /var
/dev/vx/dsk/rootdg/usrvol
1470176 1013392 453256 69% /usr
/dev/vx/dsk/rootdg/orabinvol
4096000 2158432 1816475 54% /uorabin
/dev/vx/dsk/rootdg/tmpvol
614400 76384 533872 13% /tmp
/dev/vx/dsk/rootdg/optvol
1430216 1162096 266096 81% /opt
/dev/vx/dsk/rootdg/homevol
20480 2744 17664 13% /home

With VxVM the mirroring of root disk only need a command line:

/etc/vx/bin/vxrootmir ???v ???b ???R c5t2d1 (for example)

Best regards

Re: VxVM and vg00

Hi,
Abad is right. There is no separate license required for
mirroring "only" rootdg. The Base VxVM is enough. You need
separate mirror license for mirroring dg's other than rootdg.

Re: VxVM and vg00

When you say September 2002 CD's is that for HPUX11.00 as well as HPUX 11i ?

Re: VxVM and vg00

You can't boot off a vxVm volume(apologies to all for earlier vxfm typo).

I sense HP is backing away from vxVm becasue they have to pay Veritas for it and because they paid $18 Billion for Compaq and got a pretty good fs with True64 Unix.

that's from HP World.
