Pavilion 540n with SiS 650 video card and RH Linux

Hi,
I just installed a 2nd drive on my HP 540n PC. It has the SiS 650 video card. RedHat Linux 7.3 does not seem to have any knowledge of this video card. When I try to bring it up with a generic video card selection, the screen just flashes prompts for a while and then gives up. I have tried reconfiguring with xf86config, but no luck.

Has anyone else gotten this to work or any suggestions? I am frustrated and about to give up.

thanks

Mark,
This card isn't currently included in the regular release however here are a couple of links for drivers for this card which you can install for using with XFree86. I wish you the best of luck if this helps please don't forget the points.

Re: Pavilion 540n with SiS 650 video card and RH Linux

Thanks for your reply.

My only problem is that I am running RHL 7.3, and am not sure if this fix (for 7.2) will work or not.

Any idea? Am going to give it a shot.

Re: Pavilion 540n with SiS 650 video card and RH Linux

Hello,

For me, a driver designed for RedHat 7.2 should work with 7.3. If it doesn't, please post error messages (check /var/log/XFree*.log).

Good luck.

Re: Pavilion 540n with SiS 650 video card and RH Linux

All,

thanks for the replies and ideas so far, but still does not work.

I am attaching a copy of the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file. I have downloaded the Sis_drv.o-410 patch file and installed it via the instructions (see http://www.sis.com/support/driver/linux.htm )

Perhaps this log file gives more clues?

Your help is appreciated. Why does HP use chipsets which are not supported - or is it that this is just too new?

thank you

Re: Pavilion 540n with SiS 650 video card and RH Linux

All,

I believe I have it working, but don't know yet if its completely functional. Here is what I did;

1). downloaded and installed the patch for X Servers 4.1.0, and RH 7.2. It did work for 7.3
2). edited the XF86Config-4 file to enter the video chipset and driver.
3). At this point it still did not work, I noted from the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file that it could not H or V sync at any of the settings. My monitor was supposed to be able to sync 30->68KHz (horiz) and 100 Hz. vertical, but decided to try some diff settings. I noted the XP display control panel had it set to 60 Hz. (vert) so that is what I set the verticle to, and also set tried the Hsync at different settings, finally it worked at 60 (KHz).

I still am getting some errors, but at least X windows is coming up.

thanks!
