This machine is connected to Gamma camera of Nuclear medicine, so I cant use other machine, also there a softwere of imaging and proseccing was installed on the digital unix, so I cant replace any other machine.
It was connected to old printer which there no more paper and ink is made for it.
And I found a solution with copy imaging to floppy disk, then to copy it into windows pc machine.
But the floppy disk well die soon, and it has no USB port and the digital unix v 4.0 D dont support USB.
I need new solution such as connect it to PC (I prefere without router or modem) or add USB card with its drive or any sultuion.
the machine has ethernet but not indefy, scsi external port, parallel and some other ports.
Solved! Go to Solution.

Huh?
I'm more of a Tru64 V5.1B person, but I'd bet
that even 4.0D has TCP/IP networking,
including an FTP server, so it should be
relatively easy to use an FTP client on the
Windows system to access files on the Digital
UNIX system.

It could probably be configured to use almost
any network-connected PostScript-capable
printer, too.
As usual, many things are possible.

very thanks
yes it has TCP/IP networking, but how i can make it?? the manual guide explain it with using old modems that perhaps not found now, add to this that im not expert with this, I only can do TCP/IP networking for windows pc with common modem speedtouch, so if there any explain please??

sorry for my week english
I mean the ethernet has not drive insalled in the system or its not recognized or The definition of hardware is not exist.

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp
I'll guess that the network card simply isn't configured.
If you run
# netsetup
That will allow you to configure it...
Bear in mind that the built in NIC on the old AlphaStation 255s will only do 10Mb/Half Duplex, so the switch port that it connects to might need configuring appropriately.
Cheers,

If higher speed is important, and if you have
an open PCI slot, then you might start
looking for a DEC 10/100 card like a
DE500-BA. I know nothing, but I'd guess that
that would be old enough for 4.0D to
understand. (Around here (eBay), they're
cheap.)

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp
> tcp /ip to windows pc??
Uh, connect the wires? I'm not sure what the
mystery is. Any FTP client on the Windows
system (command-line, Web browser, ...)
should be able to fetch a file from the FTP
server on the Tru64 system.
If you want to send a file from the Tru64
system to the Windows system, then you would
need an FTP server on the Windows system.
FTP is probably the easiest thing to use, but
with the right software on each end, there
are other possibilities (NFS, rcp, Samba,
SSH, ...). Finding the right software for
Windows and/or such an old version of Tru64
may be difficult, so I'd start with FTP.

is it need or not need to modem or router or etc...??
I prefere direct connect with ethernet or serial ports (null modem cable) or even parallel, but I dont know which can success to connect, and I prefer not to install any softwere to the tru64 because it is defficult but no problem for windows.

It needs an Ethernet interface, and TCP/IP
must be configured. And both systems must
have their Ethernet interfaces connected
together somehow.

Ok.

Stick with Ethernet.

The Tru64 system should already have
everything it needs (basic IP networking, FTP
server). The Windows system also probably
has enough (some kind of FTP client). Is
your windows system connected to the
Internet? How? (Find out where its Ethernet
cable goes, and then run another cable from
the AlphaStation to the same box.)
> [...] there is a thinnet ports that perhaps

The built-in Ethernet interface on my
AlphaStation 200 4/233 has a 10baseT
(twisted-pair, RJ45) connector, and a 10Base2
(BNC, coax, Thinnet) connector. You should
probably use the 10baseT connector. I assume
that the Windows system has a connector
similar to that one.
If basic Ethernet wiring is a mystery, then
you should probably find someone local to
help you with it. The system management
manuals cited above explain how to configure
the network software on a Tru64 system.

my windows connected with dail up entenal modem of 2 telphone potrs, how ever, if I get new speedtouch modem of ADSL ethernet, can it connect to tru64?? can it connect if the modem i dont want to connect it to internet??
or even with any other new router but not that old kinds which was in the age of that old tru64 machine.

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp
> modem [...]
Ok. I need a better description of what is
where. Correct me if I'm wrong ...
You have a Windows PC with an Ethernet
interface? But you are not using its
Ethernet interface, because the only network
you have is a dial-up modem connection from
the PC to the Internet?
If the PC doesn't have an Ethernet interface,
then you'll probably want to get one.
(Should be very cheap.)
The AlphaStation is close to the PC, and it
also has an Ethernet interface, but its
Ethernet interface is not connected to
anything?
So, right now, there's no network connection
of any kind to the Alpha, and only the modem
to the PC?
I'm not a real Windows user, so I don't know
if Windows XP can use the modem and the
Ethernet connection at the same time.
(Perhaps XP Professional, but not XP Home?)
Worst case: Perhaps you can't get to the
Internet from the PC while you're using its
Ethernet interface to talk to the Alpha.
But I'd guess that XP Pro would have no real
trouble doing both. (I haven't used a
dial-up connection in many years, so I know
nothing, but I seem to recall something about
Internet Connection Sharing in Windows, so
I'd expect something to work somehow.)
If the PC can use both interfaces, then all
you should need to do to connect the Alpha to
the PC is to get a network hub or switch and
two cables. (And configure all the software.
Network Control Panel on Windows. See the
manual for Tru64.)
> is that 10baseT connector is still exist
> with cheap cost in the shops??
The same connector is used for (old) 10BaseT
and (new) 100BaseT (or (newer) 1000BaseT).
Almost any 100BaseT hardware can do 10 or
100. (Most things are labeled "10/100".)
Any Cat3 (or better) cable should be good
enough. (Cat5 is more common, now.) A cheap
10/100 network switch should be able to
auto-negotiate down to the 10Mb/s speed of
the old Alpha, and either 10 or 100 for
whatever is in the PC.
If your old Alpha is like my old Alpha, then
you need to make sure that it is configured
to use the 10BaseT (twisted-pair) port, not
the 10Base2 (BNC, coax, Thinnet) port. At
the SRM console prompt (">>>"):
>>>show ewa*
If the mode is not twisted-pair, then:
>>>set ewa0_mode twisted (_Not_ "AUI".)
Then power-cycle, or ">>>init".

that is my case, becuase i dont need intrnet exept 10 min in week.

yes

OK, but my real quastion is: can the old alpha recognizes this network hub or switch??
or need software installing to alpha to recognizes them?? becuase they are new not from its age.
I also read abuot ethernet crossover cable for direct connect, how ever, is the configuring software Network for Tru64 is the same for network hub or switch or ethernet crossover cable??

Ok i well try. but I think that the ethernet port itself is not enabled or its software is not installed, because someusr of unix test it in unix shell not in the SRM console prompt, and told me that, so is that is Possible.
if yes, I can recognize it from its old original software CDs, but the CD-ROM drive never to accept to mount, and I test to boot the sysetem original software CD, but it give me repaeted masseage " CD-ROM is not ready ", Is that problem resulting from the jumber?? and how I can solve it??

sorry for this clerical error, its 255/ 233 mhz like in this pictures:

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp
From the operating system if you type the command:
ifconfig -a
This should tell you what network cards are in the machine. You should see an entry called tu0. This will also tell you if the network card already has an IP address.
You might also want to look at the output of the most recent startup with:
uerf -R -r 300 | more
Which should allow you to see more details about the hardware.
Your CD-ROM drive is probably faulty. I manage a lot of these old AlphaStations and it is very common for the drives to die.
You should be able to use a crossover cable between the two machines. You will need to configure both to be on the same IP network.
Cheers,
Rob

He didn't tell me, and I can't see the

A 255 would be newer than my 200. I don't
use my AlpSta 200 systems these days, and
when I did, I was running Tru64 version 5.x,

It's not likely, but it may be possible that

not install the appropriate Ethernet driver.

and I remember other new small problem happend since about 1 year, that the SRM console dont appear when I run the machine, only appear a blue screen, until I press restart button, and in this second time the SRM console appears, and sometimes in the third time, what is this problem?? is it dangerous??
> apearently you are new to tcp/ip networking?
not only new, Im non-specialized in it, but I design to solve it myself because I bring and ask a lot of experts in unix and networks, but most of them has no Knowledge nor disire to learn about this old unique sysetm (digital unix), in the result they are usless for my case, so I forced to do it myself, and I manage (with God's guidance) to transefare images by the floppy drive, altho the way of this isnt found in all manual books of the machine, this was tow years ago, but now it seems the floppy will end, so I need other solution.

now I nearly have an clear idea what to do, and I asked a networking man about the swich, he tell me that no need to recognise it to both of windows or unix or any other OS, that I was fear of it.
but this bad news about "ewa0" is the built-in (old, slow), it scare me that it might not connect to the new Ethernet of the PC, is that is fear is true?? I hope no...

It's nice that the LED on the front still
works, but the problem may be with the laser
on the inside. Around here, it's getting
harder to find a SCSI CD-ROM drive, and I
believe that that's what you'll need.

I would not say "dangerous". Have you ever
replaced the Lithium cell? My AlpSta 200
has a 2032 Li cell, and I assume that your
255 has one, too. When that dies, the
time-of-year clock gets lost, and some NVRAM
settings probably go bad, too. It should be
old enough to be dead.

So, if I manange to get some old or used one, can it work on alpha regardless about of its manufacturer company??

Ok thanks very much, I well try to replaced the Lithium cell.
this gives an indication of that the whole alpha is eldary enough to expect its death in few years?
So indeed I must find some expert to accept to do with this case.

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp
Some people have had problems with some
drives. Alphas may be easier to satisfy than
old VAXes. I've had success with many
Toshiba drives (and some others), and with
some Yamaha CD-R/RW drives (which might be
nice if you also wish to write your data to a
CD-R). A drive which has a block-size jumper
(512 or 2048 bytes) might be more likely to
work when set to 512.
There have been many discussions of CD-ROM
drives over the years in comp.os.vms. A
drive which works for VMS is probably good
for Tru64, too.

How old is it? My AlpSta 200 systems were
new in 1995. Your box is probably a little
newer. How long do you expect a computer to
live?

ewb0.0.0.11.0 EWB0 00-00-F8-31-24-4C
...
both are recognized by the OS:
Alpha boot:
...
tu1: DECchip 21041: Revision: 1.1
tu1 at pci0 slot 11
tu1: DEC TULIP (10Mbps) Ethernet _Interface, hardware address: _00-00-F8-31-24-4C

tu0: console mode: selecting 10Base5 _(AUI) port: no carrier

ewa0: on boot prompt matches tu0: at OS-level.
and both have got an ip-address:
ifconfig -a

inet 1.1.1.1 netmask ff000000 broadcast 1.255.255.255 ipmtu 1500
tu0: flags=c63
inet 193.0.0.1 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 193.0.0.255 ipmtu
but both are configured for AUI wich is not connected:
console mode: selecting 10Base5 _(AUI) port: no carrier
check output of "set ewa0_mode ?" and "set ewb0_mode ?"
to see if they can be switched to twisted_pair

Did you try anything like:
>>>show config | more
>>>help
> so you've got two network cards installed
Or one built-in interface and one PCI card.
It might help a little if you looked at
what's in this box, and let us know what you
find.
