How is the printer connected ?

Windows XP allows you to set up Unix compatible (LPD) printers...

OK, it seems deficukt to memory this old unix on windows, however, you give me better idea.

It is hp psc 1310 series, connected by USB port, in it`s properties the port called "USB001", and the description is "virtual printer port for USB".

by the way, is that "Graphics Support Services Software" is useful for something important?

I also need to copy complete filesystem image for backup spare, and for the alpha emulater test.

currently, I well use the alpha-PC network, and only test emulating for future, for I well not dispense working real alpha machine untill I forced to.

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp

I have found an article detailing how to configure Printing from Unix to Windows Printers,

http://aplawrence.com/Unixart/ldsprintwindows.html

in windows I make as it say succesfully, but for unix the article say that:

"(OpenServer systems older than 5.0.6 do not support the "of" (output filter) clause in /etc/printcap, so this solution is not suitable for them. Instead, you should investigate setting-up a virtual local printer to act as a "wrapper" for the remote printer. This will give you a printer interface script that can act as your output filter and then forward your print jobs to the actual remote printer via the "lp" command. Here is a link to an article detailing how to configure a virtual local printer: http://aplawrence.com/SCOFAQ/FAQ_scotec7virtualprint.html.) " end.

I dont knok if my digital unix v 4.0 D is older or newer than OpenServer systems 5.0.6, but I go on try, the article says:

"Add the remote printer.
The process for OpenServer will be detailed below. Adjust the procedure as appropriate for your system.

* Go to "scoadmin / Printers / Printer Manager / Printer / Add Remote / Unix...". " end.

but I don`t find the "scoadmin", so I opend the virtual local printer article, but not sure if I shuold really make a virtual local printer as this article says.

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp

SCO OpenServer is a different version of Unix to Tru64. Whilst the set up will be similar, some of the options for printcap are likely to be different.

If I get a few spare minutes I'll test things out...

Rather than reading about how to administer
an SCO UNIX system, it might make more sense
to try reading some Tru64 documentation.

Version 4.0F should be pretty close to 4.0D.

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp

Hi,

Here is a copy of my /etc/printcap from a 4.0F machine which allows me to print to my Epson printer connected via USB on my Windows XP machine.

robtest:\
:lf=/usr/adm/robtest-err:\
:rm=:\
:rp=EPSON Stylus Photo R265 Series:\
:mx#0:\
:pl#66:\
:pw#80:\
:sd=/usr/spool/robtest:\
:xf=/usr/lbin/xf:

is the IP of my Windows machine.
EPSON Stylus Photo R265 Series is the printer name, exactly how it appears in Windows.

I've assumed that you've installed the "Print Services for Unix" option mentioned in the article you've posted.

Around here, simple text prints work fine. I've not tried printing pictures.

OK, thanks, tomorrow, I well see /../printcap, and tell you.

Now I need necessary to backup the digital unix file system, for now perhaps it is not firewalled, and not updated since 1998, so with this new network, Im little afread of some viruses or crushed system, it is deficult to reinstall the system with fluty CD-ROM.

and I have another small quastion abuot the battery of alpha motherboard, is it the same of PC battery?

with my great thanks for you.

It should have a number on it. The cell in
my AlpSta 200 is a CR2032. I don't know
what's in your PC.

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp

Yes I have a tape drive, but all the tapes is old for 10 years, some of them is storing midecal images, and some for "site tape restore" for restoring system settings, I can erase someone, thin backup the system on it, I think I can boot from that backup system tape in case of dead currently system.

and I also want to use HHD of PC to store the backup of the unix, for emulater tests, I have transfare all data to PC, and made 500 MiB of free space in partition "img0", so I can copy the system to it before copy it to PC.

I remember you talk about "dd" ccommand for copying, or I can copy the whole system tree from FTP on PC, but not sure if this method is true for make the copied system boot and wrok properly in the emulater.

for the network, no one can reach to the unix but, the PC is connected to internt by dail-up, so perhaps there is veruses can harm this old unix, or perhaps not, because of alpha processor needs special programs or veruses!!.

Chapter 11: "Administering the Archiving

I'd probably use something like "dump", and
pipe it into an "rsh" to a different system.
That could be Windows, if it has an RSH
server.

If you want to recover from a boot disk
failure, than that "btcreate" program looks
appropriate.

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp

Hi,

I've just checked an AlphaStation 255 here, and that the battery in there is a Panasonic BR2032. Any BR2032/CR2032 cell should be fine.

If you now have space in the img0 filesystem then you should be able to backup to a file.

Something like this should work:
# vdump -0f /img0/root.vdump /

This will backup the / file system to a file called root.vdump under img0.

You can then FTP that file over to your windows PC - make sure that you FTP in binary mode though to ensure that you can restore it.

I make the directoriy /usr/HP1310, and have found the file /usr/lbin/xf, but haven`t found the file /usr/adm/HP1310-err.

I have used only "S3600", and the others isn`t exist, I can print on all of them by cick on mid button of mouse, and there is an orders to print the whole screen (capture) of high dinsity 1200 dpi.

I haven`t any way to print to the new printer, how to test it with any thing, text or image.

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp

OK ,I have found "xdpr -Pprintername" for printing direct x window dump screen.

but the printer not print from unix, I saw "lpstat -t", tell me he can`t know the hostmane of , I replace the with the , then tell me the connection with is down.

now after making 3 printing jobs, it say "wating for to come up, after 3 min of waiting, tell me " .connection with is down"

So I think the printer in unix configued OK, but the PC is the proplem.

other thing thant If I open " ftp , tell me " 421 Services not available, remote server has closed the connection " so it is an windows proplem.

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp

By default the built in Windows Firewall will block access to the LPD port.

You'll need to add an exception for TCP port 515.

_Where_? _Who_ tells you that?

Tru64 includes an FTP server. I don't think
that Windows XP does.

> You'll need to add an exception for TCP

You can do a simple test using Telnet. On
the Tru64 system:

telnet windows_system 515

If you get an error, then there's a problem
on the Windows side (firewall, no LPD server,
..., depending on the actual error message).

For FTP:

telnet windows_system 21

Re: how to connect tru64 v 40. D to pc windows xp

OK , I have made an exception of the firewall, add the TCP Port 515, now the 3 jobs reachs to PC printer, but the printer not print them, I opend the printer jobs in PC and compare properties of the unix jobs with an windows job, the defrence is that unix job datatype is "RAW", but the windows job
datatype is "NT EMF 1.008".

is the proplem that windows cant recognise unix priniting jobs??

on unix " lpstat -t " :

Requests on printer:

Windows XP LPD Server
Error: spesified printer does not exist
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

But Im sure of the printer and print a tset page (from windows) it is works good, and the jobs is transfared from unix "lpstat -t" to the printer in windows, but can`t be printed.

What im messing??

I know nothing, but I'd try a printer name
with no space characters in it.

If you ever can get a job sent to the
printer, then the next question will be
whether the printer (or some software on the
Windows system) will know what to do with it.
Knowing nothing about your software or your
old printer, I'd guess that the software
generates PostScript, and your old printer
could interpret PostScript. I doubt that an
HP 1310 knows what to do with PostScript, so
I'd expect that some more software would be
needed to make this all work. It might be
interesting to know (exactly) what you do on
the Windows system to get something printed
after you use FTP to transfer it (and what is
"it"?).

Very Thanks.
