Cable error from Smart Storage backup source.

Hi,

I have 2x ProLiant DL360 Gen9 servers that each contain both a P440ar and a P441 Smart Array controller. Each server also has the Smart Storage Battery installed and connected to the system board.

On BOTH servers, the P441 controller report that: "The cache for Smart Array P441 in Slot 1 is disabled due to a cable error from the Smart Storage backup power source." and "The cache module is disabled due to a cable error from the Smart Storage backup power source."

However, the battery must be good because the P440ar controllers on both servers are not reporting any issues yet they share the same battery via the system board.

I know that the P441 card also has a "FBWC module backup power connector" for connecting an external battery but it is my understanding that this is not needed because it connects to the 'shared' Smart Storage Battery..... or is this not the case? I have also looked to see if I need to connect the P441 power connector socket to another socket on the system board but there is no such socket on the system board available.

Please can anyone shed some light on how the P441 controllers are supposed to receive their battery backup with the above mentioned G9 server? Do they still need their own independent battery?

Both P441 controllers have firmware version 7.00 installed.

Thanks,

Darren.

@Suman_1978

Thanks for the link but I cannot see anything within it that directly relates to my problem and symptoms.

Re: Cable error from Smart Storage backup source.

Thanks, but I don't think its a 're-seating' issue as I have exactly the same problem on two seperate identical servers.

Ironically the post you have directed me to has, as its last entry, someone asking what seems to be the same problem that I have (also with no solution).

Its almost as either the P441 card isn't fully compatible with the server OR I do indeed need to connect a seperate battery to the P441 and not rely on the 'shared' battery.

Re: Cable error from Smart Storage backup source.

Hi,

As per the QuickSpecs for Server and P441 controller, they are compatible with each other.

Page# 8, HPE Smart Storage Battery
HPE 96W Smart Storage Battery (up to 20 Devices) with 145mm Cable Kit
NOTE: HPE 96W Smart Storage Battery provides backup power for up to 16 HPE Smart Array controllers or other devices.

You may try reseating the battery cables by switching off the server.
If still problem persist, try swapping with a similar cable or battery.

Thank You!

Re: Cable error from Smart Storage backup source.

Thanks I think you have pointed me in the right direction and is admitadly a classic case of RTFM.

Following ALL the steps (and links to other instructions) in the links you sent me lead me to the cause of the problem.

Basically, the P441 card did NOT have its cable connected to the power socket that is available on the PCIe riser board.

Thanks again.
