unable to access ilo port when using RDP?

Hi all,

I have an issues connecting with my DL360 gen9 ilo port.

I am trying to access the ilo port through a remote deskop connection so I can change settings etc without being on site. For some reason it doesn't allow me to load into the ILO using a browser.

I am using remote deskop to connect into another DL360 which is being used as a windows server, then I am connecting using a ethernet port on the Windows server to connect the the DL360gen9 but it doesn't seem to like this ?

if i connect directly from my laptop to the DL360 gen9 using ethernet i can load the ILO webpage.

Any ideas why this wont work?

would I need a cross over cable or something simple like that to connect from one DL360 to the other?

Hello,

iLO provides the ability to connect to it using the GUI or CLI and not using RDP session.

Re: unable to access ilo port when using RDP?

Hello,

The standard way to access iLO is thru the iLO Web Interface. This normally done over your production network or a dedicated management network. iLO uses standard Ethernet cabling, which includes CAT 5 with RJ-45 connectors..

Have you completed the initial configuration of iLO? Are you using DHCP or a Static IP?

Theses are the initial steps

  1. Connect iLO to the network
  2. If you are not using DHCP, use the ROM based-server utilities to configure a static IP.
  3. Configure user accounts.

Here is the link to the iLO 4 USer Guide

I hope this helps

Re: unable to access ilo port when using RDP?

using a Static IP address.
I can connect to the ILO port directly using my Laptop, but my issue is that when i use my laptop to remotely connect into another DL360 (this is being used as a windows machine) I am then unable to connect through this windows machine into the ilo of the DL360 gen9 that i want to install ESXI onto.
I am using one of the ethernet port lan1 to connect from DL360(windows machine) to DL360 g9 ilo port.

Not sure why it doesn't work as this is the same setup as I would use to configure a Cisco device which works fine.

Re: unable to access ilo port when using RDP?

I can connect to it using the GUI when my laptop is connected directly by ethernet.

my issue is that I want to connect to it from another location and not have to sit local to the device.

I have a DL360 set up as a windows server, I have this windows server connected from lan1 to the ilo port of the DL360 g9 by direct ethernet cable.
I then remote access into the Windows server and configure the lan1 adapter settings so its in the same static IP range as the DL360 g9 i want to configure (same as I would do on my laptop). When I do this it doesn't seem to load the GUI through the browser?

If I connect a Cisco device the same way I can access it from another location like my house etc so not sure why this doesn't work ?

Re: unable to access ilo port when using RDP?

This sounds like a network and cable issue. You connect your iLO port direct to a LAN port on your Windows Server. I'm not sure if iLO port support crossover on the port. If you connect devices directly you need a crossover cable. Send and receive pins are crossed in this cable. The Cisco device port may have this option . So you need to use a crossover calble or place a simple switch between both ports.

Re: unable to access ilo port when using RDP?

The second option is a TCP or route issue on your server. Check with route print. Next step is settings and bindings of your LAN port

I'll try a cross over cable and let you know, its most likely something simple like that.

Cross over cable doesn't seem to work either.

Re: unable to access ilo port when using RDP?

Hi,

So I was curious to see if your scenario would work , so I tried it in my lab. I configured a static IP, SM and GW on a laptop, then I connected a standard ethernet cable from the laptop to the iLO port.

  1. PING the IP of the laptop - Successful
  2. PING the IP of the server iLO port - Successful
  3. Entered the ILO IP in the web browser and the web page came up
  4. Successfully logged into iLO

So it looks like it works. I would check your cable. Do you see link and activity lights when you connect the cable? I have never had the need to connect to iLO like this but it does work.

Re: unable to access ilo port when using RDP?

My step is a little different as my laptop connects to a DL360 which is a windows server then that windows server connects to another dl360.
I can ping the ip address of the ilo from windows server and it comes back ok just cant seem to load the page in a browser.

tried straight cable and cross over cat5

Re: unable to access ilo port when using RDP?

I have solved my issue, turns out someone else had configured one of the other ports on the device to a matching IP i was using which must have been conflicting with my port.
