System type still shows Unmanaged

I have installed SNMP and installed the HP Proliant Support Pack for NT4 on a number of servers and when I perform a data collection this is the response I get "The device does not have any supported instrumentation." And yet I have a server that seems to be configured identically that appears correctly as managed. The only difference is it is running older versions of the the management agents. Any ideas?

Hi Richard,

Have a look at http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=348570

It relates to non-windows machines, but the background is relevent. I would say you need to install WMI/WBEM or if you have, make sure the services are running.

Check out http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/hpsim/download.html for the latest downloads.

Re: System type still shows Unmanaged

Unmanaged means HPSIM has not been able to access the Server via any Management protocol.

The easiest protocol to set up is SNMP. You need correct community names - Read Only is sufficient for identification. Note they're case sensitive.
Also check you've not set the "Accept from select hosts" in the SNMP Setting.

Any firewalls or devices that block access on the SNMP Ports?

Re: System type still shows Unmanaged

I have double checked everything but still no go.

I have set each server I have installed SNMP with the community name 'Rotorua' with 'Read Create' and 'Accept from any Host'. After doing this the HPSIM changed the system type from "unknown" to unmanaged.

If I look at the system page for the server it shows the management protocol as SMH:1 even thought SNMP is installed and working as I am able to initiate and receive a generic trap thru Compaq Management Agents in control panel.

How do I check the configuration for the agents with out reinstalling them?

Re: System type still shows Unmanaged

Have you changed HPSIM to be able to use the new community name?
Have you got a suitable Read Only string? I'm not sure but you might want a Read Only string for the Identification.

Re: System type still shows Unmanaged

Yep, I have confirmed the community settings and even tried rentering with no success.

It is as though SNMP is not working properly. Is there a way to manually tell HPSIM to use SNMP as the management protocal rather than SMH:1?

Re: System type still shows Unmanaged

After you reconfigure SNMP you need to run the "Identify Systems" task on each system. During this task SIM determines what protocols the system supports.

Re: System type still shows Unmanaged

I have made progress. I have installed WMI to each server and added a WBEM default username and password. Each system is identified.

But the management profile still does not show SNMP but WBEM. I cannot connect to management agents on each server? Like I can with my one and only odd ball server that has SNMP as a management agent?

Re: System type still shows Unmanaged

Hi Richard,

I know you said that you've rechecked your SNMP communities, but try setting the READ and READ/WRITE communities to public - I've had problems in the past using non-public values. (I know using public is less secure, but it will show if you'vve got this problem too).

Also, (sorry about this question), but you are setting the communities on the SNMP service on your client and not the SNMP Trap Service?

Also, in SIM, are you changing the Global Protocol Settings? I know this should work, but I'd also try changing the SNMP community names in the System Protocol Settings.
